PART 4 (THE END) — “SHE REMEMBERED ME.”
That afternoon, Eleanor was discharged.
Before leaving, she asked if she could stay for a few more minutes.
She wanted to sit in Room 27 one last time.
I walked with her.
She sat quietly on the edge of the bed, looking around the room.
“I spent one of the scariest nights of my life here,” she said. “But I also remember the person who made that night easier.”
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, old photograph.
It was a picture of a young woman wearing a nurse's uniform.
“Margaret,” Eleanor whispered.
I looked at the photograph.
She looked nothing like me.
And somehow, that made Eleanor laugh.
“I think I was confused when I saw you last night.”
“You probably were.”
“No,” she said, smiling. “I think I simply saw someone who made me feel safe.”
She handed me the photograph.
“I've carried this for years.”
I looked at it carefully.
On the back, there was a handwritten message:
