I got a message from a former close friend of the dead shooter in the Umbilo “hijacking” last week.
The individual says the suspect is from Harding, KZN, but also had a home in Inanda.
His nickname was Smile.
According to the friend, he was out on parole since 9 January this year.
It’s believed he was a hitman who worked closely with drug dealers.
Police records now also confirm the dead gunman is a South African.

4.4 million South Africans are undocumented. I am helping a granny pay R10 555 to a private lab for DNA testing to get a birth certificate for their grandchild to enter primary school. Plenty of South Africans are undocumented too, no birth certificate, no ID, stuck in late-registration queues at Home Affairs. Are they "criminals" as well? Being undocumented is usually a sign the state has failed, not that the person is a criminal.
