Internet censorship is becoming increasingly sophisticated. Governments around the world use different techniques to restrict access to websites, apps and online services. During internet restrictions in Iran, applications built on the Sentinel Network helped people reach the open internet. Governments rarely rely on a single technique. Instead, they combine multiple methods that target different layers of the internet. DNS blocking removes websites from being found. IP blocking prevents connections to servers. URL filtering blocks individual pages while leaving the rest of a website accessible. Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) identifies and interferes with VPN protocols and other encrypted traffic. Removing apps from app stores makes VPNs harder to install and update. Governments can also pressure hosting providers, search engines and payment providers, making online services harder to discover, access and fund. Because censorship happens across multiple layers, there is no single technology that solves it. The Sentinel Network takes a different approach. Instead of relying on centralized infrastructure, applications connect to a decentralized marketplace of independently operated nodes and can use multiple transport and obfuscation methods depending on network conditions. No solution can guarantee access in every situation, but decentralization removes many of the single points of failure governments typically target first, giving developers and users more options to stay connected.
