there are plenty of works (queer or otherwise) where this approach meshes with the story the author is trying to tell but i don't think readers are particularly obliged to respect the story that the author is trying to tell

im not saying they really think its realistic for someone to tell their crush 'i love you' and still never explicitly progress the relationship but more that portraying this level of implicit feeling in the first place is in fact 'good enough' for girls love

the problem is that when you read this as a genuine attempt at portrayal of queer relationships by the writers it starts looking even worse! like no theyre not trying to trick you or sneak anything under the censors they just actually think they did a good job

this is why the 'bait' framing sucks because obviously these metaphors aren't being used to 'deceive' the viewer into thinking they're gay. when the author introduces something to the text with the intent of having the reader react in a certain way that's just called 'writing'

of course nina loves momoka and i also love gbc but it substantively fails at being a love story in the sense that none of the explicit beats of the plot revolve around any kind of romance happening. nina is motivated by love for momoka('s music). it's all metaphor!

re: my last post you can really see how even fans of implicit yuri get swept up in this terrible conception of canonicity
but things did happen… you can see their dynamic shifted, just because they aren’t “dating” or making out onscreen doesn’t mean nothing happened. that’s such a shallow way to view things— what would the “bait” even do? make everyone mad? nina loves momoka, momoka loves nina
