A major step for African health security: Uganda’s Quality Chemical Industries Limited @qcil_uganda2 has signed an agreement to develop a generic one-dose influenza antiviral for 129 low- & middle-income countries. It is not in pharmacies yet, but it is an important step toward local production and faster access when outbreaks occur. Influenza circulates year-round in Uganda and can hit children and other vulnerable groups hardest. In past outbreaks, Africa has often been last in line for antivirals and vaccines. Qcil has over 20 years of experience making trusted HIV and malaria drugs in Uganda. They'll now work on developing and getting approval for this flu drug — actual supply will start once it passes quality checks. Qcil's CEO says this is a chance to make treatment more available in Africa while also boosting local manufacturing.

This new deal builds on an earlier agreement Roche and MPP signed in May 2026. It lets generic drug makers produce baloxavir for 129 poorer countries. Health experts recommend the drug, and it's already approved in the US and Europe. One big study found a single dose can cut the risk of spreading flu to family members by 32%.
