Learn about what our lab's alumni from the past 20 years are up to.
This year our Quantum Device Lab (@qudev , qudev.phys.ethz.ch/) has completed its first 20 years at the Department of Physics (@ETH_physics) of @ETH Zürich, since six years we are also part of the Quantum Center, @ETHQuantumCntr, and since five years we co-run the @ETH_en Zürich - @psich_en Paul Scherrer Institut #Quantum Computing Hub. One of the aspects for the whole team to be proud of is the many successes of our current and former lab members. On the occasion of our lab's 20th anniversary, I give a shout out to former lab members who have moved on to graduate school, who now do postdocs, who started their own labs as faculty members, who have started companies, who have moved on to work in the quantum industry or in the tech industry. Today, I start with the professors. There are quite a few of them. Check out the article linked below. linkedin.com/pulse/first-twe…

Check out our new paper on @arxiv .
Are you curious about the insights we gained when building our 30-m-long cryogenic microwave-frequency quantum link which we used to do a loophole free Bell test with superconducting qubits? This system also serves as a role model for how to interconnect devices in a large-scale modular superconducting #quantum #computer. In the new paper A Modular Cryogenic Link for Microwave Quantum Communication Over Distances of Tens of Meters out on @arxiv today we describe some of our learnings from constructing the system. Read more here: arxiv.org/abs/2604.15971 . Let us know if you have any questions. The work was done at the Quantum Device Lab (qudev.phys.ethz.ch/) of the Department of Physics (@ETH_physics) and the @ETHQuantumCntr of @ETH_en Zurich by Josua D. Schär, @simonstorz , Paul Magnard (now at Isentroniq), @PhilippKurpiers (now at Rohde & Schwarz), Janis Lütolf, Melvin Gehrig, @BesseJC , Anatoly Kulikov, and @AndreasAtETH with support from the European Research Council (ERC), and @ETH Zürich.

Check this out! It's been 20 years!
Happy 20th anniversary @qudev! On April 1, 2026 our #Quantum #Device #Lab (qudev.phys.ethz.ch/) celebrates its 20th anniversary as a lab at the Department of Physics (@ETH_physics) of @ETH_en Zürich, now part of the Quantum Center @ETHQuantumCntr and the @ETH Zürich - @psich_en Paul Scherrer Institut Quantum Computing Hub. On April 1, 2006 our research work started with the first master student and a couple of graduate students. If you are curious about our #research, check out our #papers (qudev.phys.ethz.ch/publicati…) or #talks (qudev.phys.ethz.ch/publicati…) from the past 20 years. We also had a large number of students, researchers, and staff who contributed to the success of our lab, more than a few hundred in total. Many of them are now running their own labs, or work in the quantum industry and beyond. Below you find a picture of our 20th from 2026 and 1st anniversary (with cake and candle) from 2007 with @peterleek (CSO of Oxford Quantum Circuits @OQC_Tech), @fink_johannes (Professor at Institute of Science and Technology Austria @ISTAustria), Gabriel Puebla-Hellmann (GM at QZabre LLC), Martin Göppel, Romeo Bianchetti, Lars Steffen (Manager at @EraneosNL), Matthias Baur (Principal Scientist at ABB). And the team photos from 2016, and 2025. If I find time, I will cover a bit more of the lab history on the occasion.

The work was done in collaboration with @fz_juelich and @RWTH Aachen, and was executed at the @ETH_en Zurich - @psich_en Quantum Computing Hub. The work was supported by @IARPAnews, by @SBFI_CH, by @Innosuisse, by the @ETHFoundation1 and by @ETH #Zurich.

Fall term group photo, with ice cream.
Every term we take a group photo with members of our @qudev lab (qudev.phys.ethz.ch/) at @ETH_en #Zurich, including current undergraduate and graduate students, PhD students, researchers and staff. We have a great, dynamic and very international team originating from 23 different countries. Interested in joining our lab at @ETH_physics, which is part of the @ETHQuantumCntr and the @ETH-@psich_en #Quantum Computing Hub? For opportunities as a student, researcher or staff check out our website: qudev.phys.ethz.ch/open_posi…. P.S.: Everyone seemed to enjoy the late summer ice cream!

Circuit QED in the early days ... .. with LabView.
A piece of #science history from 20 years ago today. This is an excerpt from my lab book showing the first signs of life of the first ever circuit #quantum electrodynamics experiment. The start of a fruitful field of research known as circuit QED with Dave Schuster Alexandre Blais, Steve Girvin and Rob Schoelkopf that has developed very nicely throughout the past 20 years with more to come. Can you tell what is shown in the graph? #CircuitQEDat20 @schusterqed @circuitqed @Yale_QI @Yale

I have a couple of more access codes. If you are a #quantum person, I would be happy to share one with you.
I have another invited code for the place where the grass is greener and the sky is bluer for a #quantum person who wants to check it out. Let me know if you are interested to be active there.

A predecessor of our loophole-free Bell test. experiment done at our lab @ETH_en @ETHQuantumCntr. free to read at @Nature : nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
Five years ago at @qudev @ETH_physics @ETH_en, documented in the collaborative publication "Challenging local realism with human choices", we ran a set of Bell tests with superconducting circuits using random basis choices which were generated by users of an online game. Take a look at the website of the collaboration: thebigbelltest.icfo.eu/ @TheBellsters Check the resulting paper for details: @Nature 557, pages 212–216 (2018). web site: nature.com/articles/s41586-0… free-to-read pdf: rdcu.be/dnqJ5 #qudevpaper

This Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment with microwave photons was performed with linear detectors and some clever data processing rather than with microwave photon counters, which did not exist at the time. Take a look.
Check out this paper in which Christian Lang from our @qudev lab at @ETH_physics @ETH_en 10 years ago observed the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect for the first time with microwave single-photon sources, doing correlation function measurements behind beam splitter. "Correlations, indistinguishability and entanglement in Hong–Ou–Mandel experiments at microwave frequencies" @NaturePhysics 9, pages 345–348 (2013) web-site: nature.com/articles/nphys261… free-to-read pdf: rdcu.be/dmQ8o Let us know, if you have any questions.
