You might be renting horsepower you don’t need to get the average task done. Closed models can cost ~5x more per task, but that premium only pays off with tasks that take 8-12 hours to complete. Whatever closed can do today, open does ~4 months later. stateofopensource.ai/

Yesterday at ALL IN, Mila and @mozilla unveiled a new initiative to build open, trustworthy AI for everyone.
With support from the Government of Canada, an initial $5M investment from Mozilla, and an additional $1M from @HypertecGroup, this collaboration aims to give organizations and institutions a real alternative to proprietary models: AI systems they can own, control, and run locally.
Canada was among the first to bet on deep learning. Now, it's betting on open AI as the next big step, and Mila plans to help build it.

As of last month, open models are winning requests.
Google held #1 on OpenRouter for 51 straight weeks. On Aug 3, DeepSeek passed them. DeepSeek weekly requests grew 12.6x since Sep 2025. We predicted this in v1 of the report. Whoever wins tokens wins requests.
Closed providers' share fell from 54% to 44% since May. The model is a commodity now, and the lock-in has moved up a layer. v1.1 of the State of Open Source AI report is live today.

a secret you share on someone else’s model can’t legally be protected. that’s because US law requires you to have taken "reasonable measures” to protect trade secrets. Where’s this heading? for starters, two recent federal rulings found that once information is typed into an AI platform, you’ve already lost your trade-secret protection.

so before you copy and paste an AI-generated response into your next document, make sure you know who owns the output and what the model’s terms actually promise about your input. closed models might promise not to tell. an open model running on your own hardware won’t even let your secrets leave the building.
