A delight for the Dickens Pickwick Club to visit The Spectator yesterday. Christopher Howse, Chloe Smith and bottles of Pol Roger looked after us delightfully well! Good to see the Dickens connections in the archives and sorry to miss Michael Gove. @BeardyHowse@michaelgove
Part of the Isle of Wight Lit Festival schools prog again. 2 days, four schools, 6 talks to 170 year 5&6’s Rapt attention, great questions and many keen to enter our Power of the Pen 500 words comp. Now a little hoarse!
A delight to meet the talented actor Brian McCann at the Pickwick Gala dinner at the Union League, Philadelphia. As CD, he gave a fun romp through American Notes and then press ganged me in to a double act. Great fun and Mrs D was most amused!
Style of Wight and our Power of the Pen short story competition. Runs until Christmas and open to young people in year 5 and 6 classes across the Island. The winners will be announced at the IW Story Festival next February. I have 7 school visits in the diary with more to follow!
In Philly last week and presented Cedric Dickens’ whisky porridge recipe to the Philly Pickwick Club. I declared Sept 24th ‘whisky porridge day’ (where you drink the whisky and throw away the porridge) as it’s Cedric’s birthday. Born in 1916, he founded both the DPC and PPC.
Two more talks for Reach Cambridge this week with 120 overseas students. They were so engrossed in Dickens’ rags to riches life story, asked some great questions which continued in the foyer long after I had finished. So rewarding!
In Cambridge waiting for my audience of 180 student’s to arrive.Tonight it was about my round the world sailing adventure and the benefits of turning left when everyone else hugs the status quo. It seemed to fall on willing ears
A local initiative in Wanstead park, east London. CD clearly owned some property there as his name is in the deeds. Not sure about it being a home for the Ternan’s though - I thought he used Charles Tringham to cover his tracks. All insight welcome!
Nice to see this in Cowes Red Jet ticket hall. The leaflet details the 6.5 mile walk that makes up the Dickens Trail. It includes 7 QR codes that takes you to a series of audio clips, all read by members of the Dickens family.
After the success of February’s Dickens House Party, the Royal Hotel Ventnor have asked us back in November to host a Dickens Christmas weekend. Full details here: royalhoteliow.co.uk/offers/c…
4 more schools last week. Around 100 young people from Year 5 and 6 who listened intently and asked some great questions. So rewarding and I reckon this afternoon was my 50th talk! And they all want to enter our now annual writing competition.
Stopped off for a coffee and squinting at the rather small menu on a wall behind the counter, I thought a ‘Flat white Boz’ sounded just the thing. Except it actually said ‘Flat white 8oz’. The DNA runs deep 😂
The new edition of ‘Style of Wight’ just out and a lovely dps on our 500 words short story competition with last month’s prize giving. We’ve all agreed it’s going to now become an annual event!
First ever Charles Dickens House Party @ the Royal Hotel, Ventnor. A double act, readings, local walks and fine food, all in the footsteps of Dickens who stayed at the hotel in 1838. Delightful guests and all keen to do it again soonest! My brother & I can’t wait to host again.
So lovely to get this feedback from Primary School teachers on the Isle of Wight after last weekends prize giving. Encouraging year 5 and 6 pupils to discover ‘the power of the pen’ and enter the Style of Wight 500 words short story competition has delivered a great response.
Well, that was very lovely. The Style of Wight ‘Power of the Pen’ 500 word short story competition concluded today with the prize giving. Delighted to have been the host and played a part in inspiring young writers.
