JUSTICE FOR SKY The NSPCA says it plans to open an animal cruelty case against SAPS officials following the death of Sky, a five-year-old Belgian Malinois who served as a police working dog. Sky was found badly injured at the SAPS Veterinary Hospital in Roodeplaat in September and was later euthanised. According to the NSPCA, its investigation found serious concerns about her condition and treatment. A post-mortem reportedly showed severe muscle damage linked to a traumatic event, fractures to both front legs and older stitched wounds. The organisation also says Sky’s records reflected ongoing stress in the kennel environment. The NSPCA says it will now pursue a case under the Animals Protection Act. “Sky was a sentient being, and no working animal should ever be treated as an asset.” Should working animals be guaranteed a proper retirement once their service ends?
