A lot of UNILAG students get into companies like Google, Microsoft, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and the likes while they’re still in school. They apply for internships and ITS, but the interesting part is that many of them already have access to information about these opportunities. They know people who have done it before. They know when applications open, what the process looks like, what to prepare for and what worked for someone before them. So they follow the same pattern. Sometimes the difference isn’t that one person is more talented. It’s access to information. Once you have exclusive information about opportunities and a roadmap from someone who has already done it, the process becomes much easier to navigate.
How do Nigerians working at big tech companies like Google, Microsoft and the likes actually land those roles? I’m genuinely curious about the path that got you there.

You’re not wrong, boss man. There are some schools where this kind of access is very common, while in others, it’s almost nonexistent. Using my university as an example, what was common in my department/faculty then was applying for scholarships, doing manual jobs, and yahoo.

I actually started getting interested in tech after visiting FUTA and Obafemi Awolowo University. That exposure made me realize there was a whole world of opportunities I wasn’t even aware of.

A major reason was school fees and the general cost of living. We were paying over ₦300k in school fees, excluding accommodation, handouts, feeding, and other expenses. People interested in tech were very few, so information about tech opportunities wasn’t really circulating.
