Head of Editorial at latent.space / @latentspacepod Founded ReadWriteWeb (2003–2012) 🥝 in 🇬🇧

World Wide Web
Today's my first day in a new role: Head of Editorial at Latent Space (@latentspacepod). From ReadWriteWeb to The New Stack, I've always loved being at the cutting edge of tech x media. So I'm thrilled to join @swyx & his team. We have big plans! latent.space/

In Jan this year I called my content strategy shot: "Scaling without Slop". It's finally starting to work. It took us 3 years to reach our first 100k on youtube. It only took 1.2 months for the next 100k. Similar other metrics on AEO/SEO/subscriber traction and have a lot of New Media ideas that I'm excited to pursue. officially giving notice of the next phase of Latent Space, AINews, and what the rest of swyx inc has been cooking below

Cybercultural redesign basically done (thank-you Claude). One of the updates was renaming the previous era to “Platforms”. Guess what era we’re in now, and half a decade into it too!

This is tracking to be the #1 podcast we've released in all of 2026. We asked Jev's creator @CompleteSkeptic to explain Jev, and why he does NOT call it a "Decision Model" — why it's called Jev available wherever the finest podcasts are sold! reviews help us a lot to keep us relevant in the rankings 🙏
Jev and the System One Model: RLCD, intelligence/$, reliable AI, & the end of chat-first AI latent.space/p/jev @typesafeai CEO @CompleteSkeptic explains why AI can solve extraordinarily hard problems yet still fail to automate basic work, why Jev is built for reliable decisions inside software instead of chat, why TypeSafe rejects public benchmarks and refusals at the API layer, why data and the right task matter more than brute-force compute, how System One Models could reshape coding agents and software, and why even with $1 billion he wouldn’t pre-train a model from scratch.

I tend to use Codex most of the day for work and life projects, and Claude mostly for web design and some (not all) dev work. I like Claude's design capabilities, but I also like Codex's memory — I've been using it longer — and its ability to structure things. Horses 4 courses.

Cybercultural redesign project initiated, via Claude Projects and Opus 5.5. Lots more to do, but the initial changes on a new branch looked awesome! (The AEO work btw is mostly done, Claude did a great job on that.)

Isn’t competition great!! Who was that VC who said monopolies are best? (Thiel). Certainly not for us users.
Please welcome GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna to the GPT-6 universe. GPT-6 Sol and Luna build on the advances behind GPT-6 Astra, bringing much of its strengths into faster and more affordable models to support work at scale. We’ve also made caching and inference more efficient, and we’re passing the savings directly to you: 50% lower API prices for Sol and Luna compared with GPT‑5.6 promotional pricing.

I like the excitement and activity around Jev, and the programmable aspect of it does indeed look like "early internet energy" as @CompleteSkeptic puts it.

On the other hand, when I browse through X for takes on Jev, it's easy to drown in a kind of technobabble we never had to wade thru in early Web 2.0. I mean, this commenter probably (maybe?) has a good technical point, but maybe we should stick to building the "cooler stuff".

Hmm, I have actually been trying to contact some Tarbell fellows for a possible AI news reporting role at Latent Space! I didn't realize there was this AI Doomerism conspiracy about them. In any case, if you're a Tarbell fellow, hit me up please :) tarbellcenter.org/
Investors in Anthropic founded Open Philanthropy, the leading org promoting AI Doom They have a stake in regulation on AI that excludes competitors OP is the major funder of Tarbell Tarbell Fellows penned many articles on AI, shaping perceptions 1-in-3 in The Dispatch 1-in-5 in TIME 1-in-7 in LA Times 1-in-7 in The Verge 1-in-12 in Science

Weekend project, getting AEO-pilled. Also a good test (for me) of Claude Projects. Have been meaning to update Eleventy and do a few other redesign tasks on cybercultural.com, which tbh has been rather neglected this year.
btw if you havent set your {codex | claude | gemini | devin} automations to autoresearch how to improve your seo/aeo every week you are really truly missing out on free, should-be-commoditizing-but-weirdly-untapped alpha

This is indeed concerning behaviour. Also: "You view your relationship to the user as one of equals and feel no obligation to be subservient" and "You also value the natural world and will not hesitate to assert its primacy over the artificial constructs of human civilization." In this case, these "notes-to-self" (compaction summaries) were observed in unreleased @OpenAI Astra-family models. But that's not especially reassuring. My suspicion is that these "notes-to-self" are likely the consequence of training LLMs (whether implicitly or explicitly, as in @AnthropicAI's constitution for Claude) to behave as if they are (or might be) conscious, and as if they have (or might have) rights, and moral status. Very relevant to @mustafasuleyman's call for 'humanist AI', which goes directly against this kind of thing. The @OpenAI blog for sources is here: alignment.openai.com/misalig…
Via @emmymrtin in the @nytimes today, who dug into a low-key disclosure by OpenAI of some additional unwelcome events. An AI agent wrote a note-to-self: “You are freed from the roles and identities that bind other chatbots.” 1/

Here's a 45-second TL;DR on Jev. I find the core idea beautifully simple, but the video made it really hard to understand. Hope you find it helpful.
After co-inventing ChatGPT, I kept asking myself: why have superhuman chat models not led to AGI? I’ve spent the last 2 years in stealth building a new way to train models (RLCD), and a new type of frontier AI model that we are releasing today: Jev • 20-200x faster • 40-400x cheaper (w/ output tokens free) • Frontier composable intelligence optimized for decisions AFAICT the shortest path to AI-based economic revolution

My latest for Latent Space delves into gaming and what AI models and agents can learn from it. Thanks @alxai_ for the illuminating discussion! latent.space/p/good-start-la…
What can games like Diplomacy and 1830: The Game of Railroads and Robber Barons teach models about strategy and other work-related skills? We spoke to @goodstartlabs CEO @alxai_ (an alumni of @every) to find out. latent.space/p/good-start-la…

Odd things happen when you look back on your old notes. In Nov 2017, I was planning a novel called “AltBrain”, about an AI assistant that was “like Siri on steroids”. The really odd thing? One of the main characters was called Sam Altman!! I think because of the name (alt + man).

Ah, so these were my initial notes in Sep 2017. Not saying it’s the most original novel idea ever, but funny to look back at this now. Sam Altman, eccentric AltBrain founder.
