As an addiction and behavioral health counselor, Iโll say it plainly: accountability is not optional just because trauma, mental illness, or other mitigating factors exist.
Context matters. Explanation matters. But if all you do is blame-shift, rationalize, minimize, and hand your responsibility to somebody else, you are not growing. You are avoiding growth.
And yes, I can tell a lot about a person by how hard they work to excuse their own behavior. That is not strength. That is not healing. That is an unhealthy pattern.
Real change sounds like: I did it. I own it. I need to do better.
If there is no ownership, no improvement, and no change, Iโm not interested in the endless excuses. I donโt waste my time with anyone that does this.
Accountability is not cruelty. It is the doorway to growth. Walk through it or stop pretending you want to change.
