Act with agency
I can’t stress enough how little an idea matters compared to the agency of the people executing the idea. I have had the privilege of knowing and sometimes even working with some of the most successful people (by various metrics). The difference between mediocre and excellent work and outcomes is predominantly one of agency. In practice this means: they dont wait for things to happen to them they go out and make things happen for them. They don’t wait for someone else to do something, for someone to teach them, for someone to give them the path, etc. They just go out and find a way to do it. I think the single biggest superpower these people have is the realization/belief that the world around them is completely mutable. Most everything that happens is because a person made it happen. I used to tell people to look around the room you’re sitting in. Look at everything. Every noun. It almost all exists because a person willed it into existence. Nothing is stopping you from doing the same. I see people online all the time dismissing someone else’s success because “I had that idea first” or whatever. I mean… yeah? If so then the difference is… you. So a bit of a self own whenever I hear that. Number one tip: act with agency.

It’s possible that ‘AI will take all jobs’ will prove to be the biggest lie of them all. ‘Change jobs’ is one thing, but ‘take jobs’ is a whole different level of delusion (which seems to ignore demographics).
All this fear around AI taking your job misses a huge part of the story... Labour force participation was falling long before AI showed up because it follows the birth rate with a twenty year lag, and birth rates have been falling for decades. So machines are mostly filling the gap left by people retiring or leaving the workforce anyway. That's a very different picture from the one you're being sold. The old GDP equation ran on population growth plus productivity growth... synthetic labour removes that ceiling entirely. Productivity keeps compounding without needing more people to do it. That's the Economic Singularity, and it changes the whole equation.

Translation: our gross margins are getting competed down to 0 by open source models and our capex burn rate is too high. Let’s maintain our margins with regulatory capture, ban open source models, and slow down the capex arms race. All with a virtue signaling cherry on top.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. Anthropic and OpenAI delaying their IPO, because their S-1 will reveal that they are bleeding money, and have no path to profitability. Solution? "AI slowdown", so they cut costs for training new models. It has everything to do with IPO, and nothing to do with safety.

Open source AI models are very good for the general public and prosperity. They are very bad for frontier labs trying to gatekeep super intelligence for a fee and IPO at multi-trillion dollar valuations.
