Saw “Godzilla Minus One” for a second time at Shinagawa, which was recently upgraded with “IMAX® with Laser.” The sound was excellent. Picked up the special edition pamphlet as well, along with the Movie Monster Series King Ghidorah Theatrical Release Commemorative Original Color Ver. A “Godzilla film” is different from an ordinary “kaiju movie.” For more than 60 years, it has transcended generations, cultivating a fanbase that continues to multiply like Godzilla cells themselves. There have been the Showa era films, the Heisei era films, the Millennium series, the MonsterVerse, director Anno’s Shin Godzilla, the animated Godzilla films. Each comes with its own distinct look and interpretation of Godzilla. Naturally, everyone has their own thoughts about this latest one. But as a longtime Godzilla fan, what makes me happiest is seeing so many people talking about it, debating it, planning merchandise and events around it, and audiences around the world embracing a Japanese-language Godzilla film. This Godzilla is neither “Minus” nor “Zero.” For humanity, it can only be a “plus.” And that goes for Minami Hamabe’s return to the world stage as well.
