The greatest interest in this revival, therefore, lay in its performers and, in particular, in the leading couple, who brought together two of the finest singers of our time, both coincidentally Albanian. Ermonela Jaho is one of the great artists of the operatic world and shines especially brightly in verismo. Probably no one since Magda Olivero has understood this style better. The soprano has the ability to embody verismo roles and employs every possible vocal and expressive resource, such as, for example, the way she uses her breath as a sigh. Thus, Jaho was Cio-Cio San from the very first moment, imbuing her performance with an overwhelming intensity. Vocally, her capacity for nuance stands out, particularly her control of the flourishes and pianissimos with which she achieves an impressive pathos effect. On stage, she captures every dramatic detail; the doubts, longings, and fears of the fragile protagonist are presented with moving transparency. In short, an absolute creation of unsurpassed intensity.
