We are sleepwalking into self-decimation disguised as innovation. Data centres consume scarce water and power while inconvenient externalities are softened by corporate narratives and research at a pace like never before .Meanwhile “cute” AI agents such as Meta’s Muse seek ever-deeper access to our digital lives. The new business model being built on ease of mistrust .we buy the product, surrender the data, feed the machine and call our own extraction progress.

Facebook’s products “harm children… and the company’s leadership knows how to make [them] safer but won’t make the necessary changes.” These were Frances Haugen’s words five years ago today in her 2021 congressional testimony. The tens of thousands of pages of internal documents she brought out — with the help of @JeffHorwitz — opened the vault and gave the world its first real look at how Meta operates and at what they (and the other social media companies) were doing to kids and teens. One of these documents revealed an internal Facebook study — covering thousands of teens from Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Turkey, and the United States. The researchers described the qualitative part of their study like this: “Teens blame Instagram for increases in the rate of anxiety and depression […] This reaction was unprompted and consistent across all groups.” Haugen’s revelations five years ago empowered survivor parents, attorneys general, and legislators to hold Big Tech accountable for their actions. 2026 would not have been such a turning point year if not for Haugen. I’m glad more people will learn her story through “The Social Reckoning.” Her bravery changed the world for the better and should inspire us all to do more to protect kids from addictive and untested technologies. We owe Frances Haugen an immense debt of gratitude. apnews.com/article/facebook-…

If we allow the architecture of human consciousness to become corporate real estate, we will have unlocked the code of the mind only to lock ourselves inside a cage of algorithms.

Perhaps Chinese AI’s greatest contribution will not be defeating American AI, but deflating its metaphysical bubble. While parts of Silicon Valley debate AI constitutions, consult theologians about machine character, lobby Washington and contemplate existential doom, China keeps asking a brutally mundane question: Can we make intelligence cheaper, smaller and useful? One side risks turning engineering into theology; the other is turning it into a commodity. The ultimate disruption may therefore be philosophical, not technological when China could force AI back from the pulpit to the factory floor.#Claudism #Pdoom #silicontheology

Public authority is meant to be exercised in the public interest. When a regulator regulates, an inspector inspects, an administrator administers and accountability actually follows violations, citizens suddenly experience what good governance was always supposed to feel like. Call it “The Mundhe Effect”. It is the contagious rediscovery of duty. And perhaps we are beginning to see traces of it elsewhere. IRDAI Chairman Ajay Seth has now spoken unusually plainly about insurance mis-selling, information asymmetry and the distortion created by excessive upfront commissions. The significance is larger than insurance. It is a regulator publicly interrogating the incentives of the industry it regulates and this is precisely what regulatory institutions exist in to do. Imagine the Mundhe Effect travelling across India. A food-safety officer who worries about food safety.A municipal commissioner who worries about the municipality.A banking regulator obsessed with depositors and borrowers. An insurance regulator beginning with the policyholder. A pollution-control officer protecting the air rather than merely processing paperwork.Nothing revolutionary.Just constitutional plumbing finally working as designed.Perhaps that is how nations change — not always through grand revolutions, but through the quiet, contagious courage of people who simply decide to do their job. #MindheEffect #PublicService

Agents can be AI, but agency is human. It is every individual’s responsibility to empower our own agency, with the help of tools. But the North Star should always remain human centered.

The #Samodei Doctrine: weaponize dread to build trust, then write a compliance moat. #OpenAnthropic just wants you to have any AI you want, as long as it’s ours. If rivals steal our share via backlash, they won’t build safer AI. They’ll just form a cartel of new narrative peddling.

Civilization evolves by turning breakthroughs into a shared commons, not locking them in corporate vaults. True resilience isn't central gatekeeping but it's millions of minds co-evolving the tools of tomorrow. The future must remain open, decentralized, and free. 🌍✨

Dario has written that we need to “pace the frontier,” and Sam has agreed. People may be surprised by my response: go ahead. You guys are the frontier. By any reasonable metric — market share, revenue growth, model capability — the two of you have a duopoly on frontier intelligence. You’ve also claimed the lead is widening because of recursive self-improvement. I don’t see what you see in the lab. If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible. But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Stop pretending antitrust law has to be suspended so you can form a cartel. Stop pretending you need a regulatory approval process that supersedes product liability. Stop pretending METR is independent when it is intertwined with Anthropic’s investors and staff. Stop pretending you need those same evaluators to police competitors who aren’t even at the frontier. Most of all, stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic. You face massive product-liability exposure if your products enable a truly damaging cyberattack. The market already punishes models that behave in unpredictable or unauthorized ways. After the Hugging Face episode, it is simply good business for OpenAI and Anthropic to trade some raw power for reliability and predictability. Call it alignment if you want. It is also just giving customers what they want. Pacing the frontier would also create breathing room for a more intelligent conversation about regulation than Bernie Sanders’ “shut it all down.” China is very unlikely to join a global agreement, as you know, and that has to be taken into account as well. So go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it. The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So just do it. If you do, you’ll buy goodwill for the next conversation. If you don’t, we’ll know this was just another bid for regulatory capture — or an election-season psyop.

To frame the deceleration of AI as a progressive new path is to embrace a profound paradox: mistaking a nostalgic retreat into the past for the vanguard of the future, and confusing the anchor of what was with the compass of what must be. #ThePauseParadoxOfAI #ProgressNotParalysis

A humble note to speakers after #GFF26: numbers are evidence, not eloquence-when trillions, billions and 10Xs replace original thought, the audience may remember the arithmetic but forget the speaker.

Another important observation at #GFF26 some ministerial speeches made UPI feel less like Digital Public Infrastructure and more like Digital Public Vocabulary—billions of transactions repeatedly deployed where an original thought might have been; India built UPI to move money, not to carry every speech.
