André-Marie Ampère was so absorbed in mathematics that, according to an old anecdote, he carried chalk and used any convenient surface as a blackboard. One day in Paris, an idea struck him. He began covering the back of a stationary cab with equations. Deep in calculation, he suddenly watched his “blackboard” move away as the cab departed, carrying his unfinished solution down the street. They will not call it “turbo.” They just call it “rare” Colorectal cancer in teenagers. The New York Post didn’t whisper it. Under 21. Median age in the study: 16 and a half. Eighty-four kids. Eighty percent had no family history. The symptoms they list are the ones a GP can easily wave off: abdominal pain. Change in bowel habits. Weight loss. Blood. They call it different. More aggressive. Advanced at diagnosis. Often fatal. A 16-year-old should not be meeting an oncologist with stage 4 bowel cancer and no family history. That’s not a screening gap. That’s a disease behaving like it got somewhere in a hurry. They can keep the polite name. It’s Turbo. nypost.com/2026/10/02/health…

This is Korbin Colthorp. He’s the ONLY doctor in Western Michigan University’s 28-person Family Medicine–Kalamazoo residency who attended medical school in the United States. The other 27 went to medical school abroad. 27 out of 28. 96.4%. Americans are told we have a doctor shortage. Maybe we should start asking why the solution apparently isn’t training more Americans.

🚨 DARK CHOCOLATE MAY CONTAIN LEAD AND CADMIUM Dark chocolate is often considered a healthier sweet because it contains cocoa compounds and antioxidants that may have benefits for heart health. However, testing has found that some dark chocolate products also contain measurable amounts of heavy metals, including lead and cadmium. Consumer Reports tested 28 popular dark chocolate products and found lead, cadmium, or both in 23 of them. In some cases, eating about one ounce per day could result in exposure above California’s strict reference levels for these metals. Similar findings came from a 2024 study published in Frontiers in Nutrition. Researchers analyzed 72 cocoa and dark chocolate products purchased in the United States between 2014 and 2022. They found that 43% exceeded the reference level used for lead and 35% exceeded the reference level used for cadmium. None exceeded the arsenic level used in the study. The amount of contamination varied considerably between products. Some chocolates had relatively low levels, showing that it is possible to produce cocoa products with much lower concentrations of these metals. Lead and cadmium are important because the body can be affected by long-term exposure. Lead is particularly concerning for children because exposure has been associated with problems involving brain development, learning and IQ. In adults, long-term exposure has been linked with cardiovascular and kidney problems. Cadmium can also accumulate in the body and is especially associated with kidney and bone damage after prolonged exposure. The metals can enter cocoa through different routes. Cadmium can be taken up by cocoa plants from contaminated soil. Lead contamination can also occur after harvesting through drying, transportation, processing, dust, or contact with contaminated surfaces. This does not mean that eating a piece of dark chocolate will poison you. The concern is mainly about repeated exposure over time, particularly among children and during pregnancy. It also does not mean that all dark chocolate should be avoided. The testing showed significant differences between products, with some brands containing much lower levels of lead and cadmium than others. For people who regularly eat dark chocolate, especially children and pregnant individuals, choosing products with lower heavy-metal levels and avoiding excessive daily consumption can help reduce exposure. Hikaru Kuribayashi is an 18-year-old student from Sapporo, Japan, who advances the mathematics of flexible structures. Inspired by origami and ladybug wings, he developed a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to sample the full configuration space of origami and linkages. His model treats folds as graphs and uses statistical mechanics to explore many possible motions. This research won the top $100,000 award at the 2026 Regeneron ISEF. It connects traditional Japanese art with modern computation for engineering applications. His work adds a new chapter to the recent history of applied mathematical modeling.

These three men are identical triplets who were separated at birth, adopted by different families, and didn't meet until they were 19. Years later, they found out they had been split up on purpose, as part of a secret experiment. In 1980, Bobby Shafran, one of the brothers, arrived at a college in New York, where strangers greeted him like an old friend and kept calling him Eddy. Bobby had no idea why. Then someone figured it out. He looked exactly like a student from the year before, Eddy Galland. The two had the same birthday, and both had been adopted. So Bobby went to Eddy's house to see for himself. When Eddy opened the door, it was like looking into a mirror. Their story ended up in the newspapers. A few days later, a third young man named David Kellman saw the photo and recognized his own face. The brothers became instant celebrities. They went on talk shows, appeared in a movie, and opened a restaurant in New York. But their families wanted answers. Why had the adoption agency split them up without ever telling anyone? The truth was darker than anyone imagined. The boys had been part of a secret study on nature versus nurture. For years, researchers had visited them as children, filming and testing them. Their parents were told it was a routine study of adopted kids. As adults, the brothers never got over what had been done to them. In 1995, Eddy took his own life. He was 33. The results of the study were never published, and the records are sealed at Yale University until 2065.

Think you’re looking at two images? Try this little trick and you’ll see three. Cross your eyes while slowly moving your phone away from your face. If you’re new to stereoscopic art, keep adjusting until the two images merge into three. The center image should suddenly pop into 3D.
