1/ Transformers: The Movie is a paradox of a film. Cynically created in the most crass, commercial way, yet bursting with creativity and artistry in nearly every frame. #TransformersTheMovie #Transformers #AnimationHistory #80sMovies

Dr. Toon nailed it: Nickelodeon never knew what it had with The Ren & Stimpy Show. They wanted something like Angry Beavers and got archetypal horror instead—which nicely leads us into October, a month I'll spend focusing on that! #AnimationHistory #RenAndStimpy

Dr. Toon argued that The Ren & Stimpy Show subconsciously processed fears surrounding AIDS, politics, and powerlessness through a show that may have intended to be the heir to Bob Clampett, but became something closer to cartoon body horror. #AnimationHistory #RenAndStimpy

In 2001, critics still called The Ren & Stimpy Show “Tex Avery on drugs,” but Dr. Toon argued that its appeal wasn't the return to vintage animation clichés, but its pathological descent into madness, which had no precedent in animation. #AnimationHistory #RenAndStimpy

TMNT Adventures #27 also riffs on “Which way did he go, George?” The famous catchphrase originated as a parody of Lennie Small in the 1939 film adaptation of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, popularized by Tex Avery’s 1940 Looney Tunes short Of Fox and Hounds. #AnimationHistory

Cartoons Aren't Real, a Ren & Stimpy article from 2001, shows how the show was viewed at the time, buried under anime, Cartoon Network, and new Nick/Disney hits. Only memories, old VHS tapes, and the lingering Spumco visual stain remained. #AnimationHistory #RenAndStimpy

Film Threat #16 (June 1994) argued that the Games era of Ren & Stimpy lost its heart, brain, and voice. The characters were reduced to interchangeable puppets for mean-spirited abuse, while old SpumCo gags were recycled without wit. #AnimationHistory #RenAndStimpy

The Looney Tunes Show director/designer Jessica Borutski was also a Spümcø alumna. She worked on the Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon episodes Naked Beach Frenzy and Stimpy’s Pregnant at Spümcø Canada, where she was credited as an animator and layout artist. #AnimationHistory
Haven't seen Dan Vs. so I'll take your word for it. I agree some episodes could have pushed the cartooniess more, but some episodes like Casa de Calma and Point, Laser Point were full of cartooniness; Jim Smith of Spümcø even storyboarded them.
