THE WOMEN WHO LIVED UNDER ISIS Look at this woman. She is an Iraqi Christian woman from Qaraqosh, photographed after being displaced from her home during the ISIS advance. Her photograph represents a much larger story. When ISIS swept through parts of Iraq and Syria, women were kidnapped, enslaved, sexually assaulted, forcibly married and murdered. Christian communities that had existed in the region for generations were driven from their homes. ISIS also used horrific forms of execution, including beheadings and crucifixion. In one reported case from 2015, 12 Christians were killed after refusing to renounce their faith. Four male Christians were reportedly tortured and crucified. In another group, two Christian women were reportedly publicly raped before they and six others were beheaded. When you look at this woman’s face and the crucifix in her hands, remember the countless women whose photographs we will never see and whose names we will never know. They lost homes. They lost families. Some lost their lives. But their stories should not be forgotten. Tell their stories. Remember what happened to them. And most importantly, tell the truth about what happened.

I can’t tell you how many of y’all have told me sharia law would never be a thing in the United States. Then you proceed to tell me how I know nothing about it.  If that profile picture is actually you, I hope you understand the history you’re dismissing. In Iran in 1979, women participated in the revolution for many different reasons, and many believed they were helping create a freer or more just society. Yet shortly afterward, women were protesting compulsory hijab and watching rights they had previously exercised become restricted under the new Islamic Republic. I know what Sharia is. Islamic law implemented by governments around the world have had very real consequences for women, religious minorities, converts, and dissenters. Women in Iran are still risking their lives protesting compulsory dress rules and other restrictions. Today, girls in Afghanistan are barred from formal education beyond primary school. Women have been banned from universities. Their ability to work, travel and participate in public life has been severely restricted. Girls are literally attending underground schools because getting an education can no longer be taken for granted. Women also live under enforced rules governing their dress and behavior in public. That’s why I refuse to dismiss women who warn about religious law being used to restrict women’s rights. I don’t care whether the oppression comes from a government, a political movement or someone claiming God requires it. Women should not lose their education, freedom of movement or equal protection under the law. AND don’t lecture me about feminism while ignoring Afghan women who are risking punishment just to learn. There are Islamic scholars, former Muslims, historians, human-rights advocates, and Christian scholars who have spent decades studying these issues. You don’t get to dismiss all of those concerns simply because you think they could never affect the United States. Muslims are running for Office in America and they’re getting their money from the very people that are sitting in their mosques and meetings talking about how they need to run for public office and they need to fix America.  I detest any political movement religious or otherwise that seeks to replace equal protection, individual liberty, freedom of religion, or constitutional law with rules that give people different rights based on sex or religion. I have heard the videos about how they would take America by ballot or by bullet. How islam would be in every home and tent in America. How white people need to be replaced.  I watched conference calls where they talked about bringing back specific amendments. One example the 18th amendment, which is prohibition. They literally had conversations about how they could change our constitution to mirror islam. Over 200 Muslims just won their primary in 2026. Let that sink in for a minute! We also have thousands of mosques in this country, with no telling what kinds of weapons. If you’re going to call yourself a feminist, then be willing to talk about women being oppressed anywhere in the world, including when that oppression is justified in the name of religion. The women fighting compulsory hijab in Iran deserve that same concern..

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is pushing a new rule that would ban burqas and niqabs in Italian schools and I support it. First, let’s be clear about what this actually does. A hijab leaves a woman’s face visible. A niqab covers the face except for the eyes, while a burqa covers the face and body much more completely. Meloni’s position is simple; when you walk into a school, your face should be visible. And I agree. Schools should be places where teachers can identify students, people can communicate face-to-face, and the same basic security and identification expectations apply to everyone. America needs the same! Proper interaction as well as safety!
