Imagine if a black child said to their parents: “I was born the wrong colour. I should be white.” Would the parents say, “We believe you,” and try to have their child’s skin colour medically altered?
Would progressives celebrate the child “coming out” as white, and praise the parents? Or would they react with horror, and question why the child could possibly hold such a bizarre belief. Might they look for answers in modern, online culture, or perhaps ingrained racism and attitudes towards skin colour in wider society?
Okay, the answers to these hypothetical questions are obvious. You can’t be born the “wrong” colour, ethnicity or race. Any child who thought they had been would receive help, support and counselling - not a trip to a skin-bleaching clinic.
And yet some people on the political left regard it as compassionate and necessary to affirm a child who believes they were “born in the wrong body”, even where that may ultimately lead towards ruinous, irreversible medical interventions. They believe this so strongly, they want to stop parents even questioning their confused child’s viewpoint.
Why is one response regarded as obviously ridiculous and disturbing, while the other has been presented as kindness?
Make it make sense.
