My view on the
@MoonPay PayBox launch.
I think MoonPay played this launch really well from a marketing perspective. They announced free USDC rewards, asked people to connect ChatGPT or Claude, create a PayBox wallet, and link their X account.
Within hours, Crypto Twitter was full of PayBox screenshots, tutorials, and people telling everyone else to join before it was too late.
Then came the wait....
For almost two days, thousands, maybe even millions of users kept refreshing the app, reconnecting their X accounts, checking their wallets, and hoping the claim would finally go through. Many stayed awake late into the night because they didn't want to miss the reward.
Yes, some users received great USDC rewards, and congratulations to them. But those screenshots only created more FOMO and pulled even more people into the campaign.
The frustrating part came later. After spending hours completing every step, many users found out they were in a restricted country and couldn't claim anything.
That's the part I don't agree with.
If certain countries weren't eligible, that should have been made crystal clear before people invested their time. Finding out at the end after hours of waiting leaves a bad impression.
I'm not calling MoonPay a scam because real users did receive rewards. But I do think this campaign generated massive engagement while a huge number of users were left disappointed.
Good marketing can bring people in once.
Transparency is what brings them back.
From a marketing perspective, it was brilliant.
From a user experience perspective, it could have been handled much better.
In crypto, attention is valuable.
Trust is even more valuable.
What do you think?
