Earlier this month, I joined @coeff_giving as Managing Director for Global Health and Development Policy. My first major project in this role launches today: the Health Aid Transition Fund, $165 million over the next few years to help low- and middle-income countries operate health programs that donors used to pay for and run. coefficientgiving.org/funds/… For two decades, external donors largely covered the recurring costs of basic #globalhealth programs, especially for #HIV and #malaria. That's ending fast: total assistance fell more than 20% from 2024 to 2025, with further cuts expected. So governments now have to scale up finance and often deliver these programs themselves. The new bilateral agreements with the U.S. require co-financing of around 40% of health funding on average, and most of these programs have historically run with no formal government cost share at all. That's a big leap from one budget year to the next. The good news is that governments want the handover to work and are asking for help that philanthropy is well-equipped to deliver, such as cost analyses, financing strategies, and technical support to get budgeted money out the door to clinics and suppliers. More from me on the Fund's strategy: coefficientgiving.substack.c…

Today we’re launching Project Tailwind, a call for founders to start ambitious new AI safety initiatives: coefficientgiving.org/tailwi… We’re looking for great people to engage seriously with the risks of transformative AI, and to create the research, technologies, and institutions that will help humanity navigate them. There are critical, basic problems that no one owns. Over the last several months, my team at @coeff_giving brainstormed ideas we’d be excited to fund if we could find a promising founder, and the list quickly grew to more than 200 entries. We’ve narrowed it down to our favorites, but we also expect the best founders to bring their own ideas: coefficientgiving.org/tailwi… We’re providing funding at three levels: 1️⃣ Pre-seed: $200k to $2m to develop an idea and build a team 2️⃣ Seed: $2m to $20m to launch and scale 3️⃣ Scale: $20m to $200m+ for proven teams to scale, or world-class teams to start If you’re excited about something on our list, or you have another proposal for driving the field forward, you should get involved: coefficientgiving.org/tailwi… There are more good projects than there are people to work on them. Please help us make that stop being true! Also hi, I’m Emily! This is my first tweet. I lead AI and biosecurity grantmaking at @coeff_giving.

News! @coeff_giving is significantly accelerating our global health and wellbeing giving in 2026-27! Increasing our @GiveWell support to $1B was the first step. Today we're taking another: Launchpad Funds, an RFP to seed new funds to take on big, underfunded problems in GHW. 🧵

We started a Substack! coefficientgiving.substack.c… One of my favorite things about working at @coeff_giving is how much good public writing our staff produces. A few of my favorites from the past year: 1️⃣ @Lewis_Bollard's great end-of-year newsletter on big wins for farmed animals: farmanimalwelfare.substack.c… 2️⃣ @deenamousa on why there aren't more AI radiologists, in @WorksInProgMag: worksinprogress.co/issue/the… 3️⃣ Andrew Snyder-Beattie on four pillars for countering catastrophic biological risk, from our biosecurity team's new blog: defensesindepth.bio/the-four… None of those are on our website, so you would've had to know where to look. Now, posts like that will all be in one place.

We just made our biggest grant yet: $212 million to @AgainstMalaria to support bed net campaigns in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with other @GiveWell donors adding another $64 million. GiveWell expects these nets to avert 67,000 deaths, mostly in kids under five.

I’m really excited about the Strep A Vaccine Fund we’re launching today. IMO the basic case here is a great recipe for impact: → A huge problem: ~1% of total annual deaths worldwide (>600k) → Super neglected: ~$14M/yr of R&D globally before this, ~50x less than malaria which has similar mortality → Newly tractable: new human challenge models and earlier diagnostics should speed the path to an approved vaccine Grateful to our partners Adam and Abigail Winkel, Good Ventures, Lucy Southworth, @ThePatchworkCLT, and a few anon donors for getting us to >$140M at launch. We’re continuing to actively fundraise and think we could effectively spend >$200M over the next few years. Our goal is to double the number of Strep A vaccine candidates in clinical trials and have at least one ready for Phase 3 trials by the end of 2030. And I’m thrilled to be betting on Katharine’s vision here! As a grad student, she co-invented the R21 malaria vaccine that’s now reaching millions of kids. I’m hoping to see hundreds of millions of future Strep A vaccine doses with her fingerprints on them.
Today, @coeff_giving is launching the Strep A Vaccine Fund, a multi-donor initiative to accelerate vaccine development against one of the world's most neglected infectious diseases relative to its scale. Strep A kills ~639,000 people a year. There is no vaccine. I think that can change 🧵

.@coeff_giving directed over $1b in 2025, the most in our history. I wrote a more personal annual letter this year, focusing on what a decade of grantmaking has taught me, how I'm thinking about AI, and how we're grappling with giving at this scale. 🧵

Cool to see Cari and Dustin highlighted in TIME100 Philanthropy today. They don't toot their own horns much, but they've given over $4b so far - I believe they're the youngest billionaires to have given such a high proportion of their wealth away.
