The Milton Friedman story Tickr shared today stuck with me. In 1967 he wanted to short $300,000 of sterling. Three Chicago banks refused him. Back then FX access was basically locked behind banks and commercial clients only. Three weeks later Britain devalued the pound by 14.3%. He was right. He just had no market to act on it. By 1971 CME paid him to make the case for currency futures. Launched in 1972. Suddenly being right actually meant something because there was finally a market to express it in. That's exactly the shift happening with RWAs right now. For decades, being right about a stock or commodity move meant nothing if you didn't have a broker, the right account, or market hours on your side.
