almost all websites use a third party service, like AWS, to host their servers. however, OTW owns all their own servers for AO3. this keeps them safe from third parties that might restrict them, but it’s also VERY expensive. this is most of why they need donations. any questions?
For anyone confused as to why people donate to AO3... do you not buy books? Video games? A cup of coffee at the cafe? Its completely normal to fund your hobbies and the things you like.
