ALT As with the evils of the PC Brigade before it, the foundational idea of the anti-woke crusade is that of a tyranny of offence, one wielded by vulnerable communities, charities and human rights organisations.  It is they — the easily offended, and not governments, corporations, or the world’s richest men — who hold the real power in public life, and their chilling effect on all our freedoms must be stopped. It gives such people too much credit to even parse their argument, but it should be said plainly: Wokeness, like political correctness, is little more than a perjorative term to describe standardised decency, and the small, sometimes clumsy, measures taken to achieve mutual respect and esteem in a heterogenous world. To be more aware of, and respectful toward other people’s experiences, and to agitate for a more just society in which everyone shares the same social, political, and rhetorical freedoms as anyone else.
