Model releases are accelerating, and hardware tapeout is compressing from multi-year roadmaps to annual launches. Hot Chips is my favorite conference, and it’s where I launched Cerebras 7 years ago. This year’s conference was especially exciting, and so much innovation was shared. I am watching the industry recreate itself: SRAM is mainstream, DRAM is moving into the third dimension, networks are being fundamentally redesigned, and AI is helping design and program the chips themselves. The industry has never moved faster and some of the hardest architectural questions are still wide open.

The diamond industry is not in decline. It is in the middle of a reset, and the shape of it is now visible. I spoke to @forbesafrica about the forces reshaping both natural and lab-grown diamonds, and why this sector's future depends on clarity, recalibration, and strategic alignment. The lab-grown market now runs on three engines. China is the production base, growing around 22 million carats in 2025, close to three-fifths of global supply, through vast HPHT and CVD capacity. India is the processing spine, applying its cutting and polishing expertise to synthetic rough alongside natural goods while building CVD capacity of its own, to the point that its polished lab-grown exports have overtaken its polished natural exports for the first time. The United States is the consumption engine, absorbing that volume through accessible, price-competitive jewellery and reshaping long-standing purchasing habits, particularly in bridal. The India to United States leg of that chain was on public display when Prime Minister @narendramodi presented a 7.5-carat lab-grown diamond, grown in Surat using solar and wind power, to then US First Lady Dr Jill Bdien @FLOTUS46Archive in 2023. The same pipeline that created unprecedented volume has also flooded retail channels and compressed margins across the chain. Africa carries the consequences most directly. In Botswana, diamonds account for roughly 80% of export revenue. Recalibration is not an abstraction there; it is fiscal policy. My position is straightforward: lab-grown producers should look beyond retail. Natural diamonds are authentic, finite, and formed over billions of years in ways no factory will replicate. That is a story, and stories carry value. Lab-grown diamonds hold extraordinary physical properties, including the highest thermal conductivity of any known material, some five times that of copper, which makes them an essential engineering material for semiconductors, quantum technologies, precision optics, and the thermal demands of AI infrastructure. They are creating beautiful paint. Their job is not to sell the paint. It is to sell the painting. There is room for both. Lab-grown producers can take the cuts natural houses will not touch, while natural producers earn trust through traceability. The coffee industry solved this years ago: origin signifies quality, and consumers pay for it. With that division clear, the whole trade, from African producing nations to trading centres such as Dubai, has a stable footing to build on.
