What does privilege ask of us? At a seminar hosted by @UNICEFHK under its Young Envoys Programme, our CEO @sidchat1, Honorary Advisor to UNICEF HK, spoke with young people about what nearly 30 years with the United Nations have taught him. He shared what he witnessed in Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq: children denied an education, schools destroyed by violence, girls subjected to harmful practices. His message to the next generation was clear. Stability, schooling and clean water are a "massive privilege," and gratitude should turn into action against inequality. The young envoys took his words to heart. They spoke about inequality as a web of poverty, health and education, about the fact that no child chooses where they are born, and about empathy, courage and compassion as the foundations of young leadership. Last week in Vienna 🇦🇹 was spectacular. It was a privilege to be at the Liechtenstein City Palace, belonging to the Princely Family of Liechtenstein, for the "Global Stewards of Impact" gathering. It began with a marvellous black-tie dinner beneath the gilded ceilings, and continued the next morning with a high-level roundtable in the Boiserie Room. Business leaders, family-enterprise owners and impact practitioners from Asia and Europe gathered around one table. In my remarks, I made a case that Europe–China relations matter far beyond the two partners themselves. When Europe and China collaborate, the world 🌎 gains geopolitical stability, development momentum and shared economic progress. In a fragmented world, that collaboration is a necessity, not a luxury. As CEO of Global Neighbours, I am convinced that Track 2 and Track 1.5 diplomacy must remain an essential pillar. When official channels are strained, trusted relationships built patiently and quietly keep the door open. Rooms like this one are where that trust is built. Today in Vienna Austria 🇦🇹, a warm and substantive meeting with Ambassador María Aurora Mejía Errasquín, Ambassador of Spain 🇪🇸 to Austria, at the historic Spanish Embassy on Schwarzenbergplatz — a former Ringstrasse-era palace Spain has called home since 1927. Ambassador Mejía brings a remarkable career to the role: postings from Bucharest 🇷🇴 to Brasília 🇧🇷 to NATO, service as Special Envoy for Gender Equality and later to Afghanistan 🇦🇫 and Pakistan, 🇵🇰 and most recently running the machinery behind Spain's 2023 EU Council Presidency. What if preventing conflict begins, in part, with how leaders take care of themselves? In my recent conversation with @mukeshkapila on @FadingCauses podcast, we explored a question that deserves far more attention. Can the health of a leader influence the health of the world?🌎 Physical health & Mental wellbeing are key to manage stress. And, perhaps most importantly, the ability to remain calm under pressure. We often speak about conflict prevention in terms of diplomacy, institutions, intelligence and geopolitics. All of these matter. But behind every decision is a human being with enormous power. A leader who is exhausted, chronically stressed, emotionally overwhelmed or unable to regulate their impulses can make very different decisions from one who is physically and mentally grounded. As a combat veteran I can confirm that calm is a superpower. Calm does not mean weakness or passivity. It is the capacity to create space between provocation and reaction; between fear and decision; between anger and action. Healthy leaders do not automatically create a peaceful world. But leaders who are grounded, resilient and capable of self-regulation may be better equipped to prevent a crisis from becoming a catastrophe. This is a conversation I believe we need to have — not only about how we govern the world, but about how we prepare the people who govern it. Drawing on the long tradition of working alongside Russian colleagues & interlocutors across the United Nations 🇺🇳 system, I briefed the Ambassador on the work of Global Neighbours — our convening formats, our Europe–Asia initiatives, including Tracks to the Future, and our efforts to create bridges for dialogue through Track 1.5 and Track 2 diplomacy. "Differences need not preclude cooperation" — my new piece for China Daily Global, ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. 🇮🇳 From roughly AD 1 to AD 1800, India 🇮🇳 and China 🇨🇳 were the two great civilizational poles of the world 🌎 and for most of that period they were each other's teachers and customers rather than adversaries. What broke that was not Asian. It was the colonial chapter and the upheaval that followed. We have been estranged for the shortest, most recent chapter of a very long story. It would be fatalistic to treat that chapter as the whole book. Nearly thirty years in the UN 🇺🇳 — South Sudan 🇸🇸,Somalia 🇸🇴, Iraq 🇮🇶.
