Three years after October 7, Jew-hatred is nastier and more aggressive, yet most people turn a blind eye. Not @MrAtheistPants. He UNLEASHES: Islam's rise. The Democratic Party. A propaganda press. These, he says, are the enemies of civil society.

Triste realidade.

AI will not be "the Basilisk", nor a benevolent silicon god! I'm not saying AI will bring us no unfortunate outcomes, present no problems, no threats, nor am I saying it will bring us no positive outcomes, no opportunities, no great things. It's already a powerful technology and it will be even more powerful and transformative. AI is not "magic", though, and it never will be. Physical contrains will apply, and even an ASI — whatever one really means by that — will not surpass daily physical limitations. That's why there will be no miracles (eternal life for humans in a paradisiac, hyper-abundant world where no one really has to work if not feeling so, where all diseases have a cure and people know only happiness and satisfaction), nor doom. I really have concerns about how we, humans, will apply AI tools for evil deeds: scams, frauds, sabotage, terrorism, warfare. I also have concerns about the disastrous outcomes that will come because someone was careless or lazy and didn't check an important AI-driven system. I have hopes that AI can indeed bring us nice things, helping us in everyday tasks and in advance science/tech. Like electronics, computers and internet brought us many great things, AI will bring us more nice things. All these things brought us some bad things, too, and AI will disappoint us regarding some things. AI doomers are millenarian cultists that convinced themselves Sci-Fi materials are prophecies. They create magical scenarios out of blue and act if they are true. Almost all of their biggest fears are based in hypothetical, magical ASI capabilities that ignore basic physical constraints, logistics, engineering processes, etc: they simply imagine a god-like über-able agent that doesn't obey Physics (just because it is "smart enough") and cries in horror. Many of the so called "e/acc" also believes in a god-like, über-able magical agentinc ASI — but for some of them, this silicon-god will be uttermost benevolent and bring us paradise on Earth (or in a simulated world, with AI simulating human minds and personalities). Again, simply because it is supposed to be "smart enough" don't deny physical constraints. I've sometimes find some weird "e/acc" guys who think AI will bring us the monstrous "evil god" AI doomers tell us about, but they think we humans "deserve it", because we are "inferior" to the silicon beings with digital minds. They simply want Apocalypse to happen — sooner! Weird people. Even if in the future we build some AGI with superhuman capabilities, this thing wouldn't be magical and simply ignore Physical Reality. In the case we build an ASI, it will be no paradise-on-Earth and no last-days. We must focus on the most probable issues that can indeed happen before AGI or ASI is build. They are serious issues. And ASI will be no god, benevolent or evil, but it will bring us new serious issues to deal with. Turns out I'm an "atheist" towards AI, too.

Three years ago a violent, Bronze Age in style, raid was launched against Israelis and more than a thousand people were slaughtered, many of them monstrously raped in the process, and hundreads of Israelis (or simply people that happened yo be there at the time) were held captive as war trophies. Some bodies were brought back to the raiders' villages, where thousands of civilians celebrated with overflowing joy. Those raiders spread terror, death and nastiness captured in video. That day, knowing very well what would happens next, those raiders started a bloody war. If the raided people had answered in kind, in a Bronze Age warfare style like the raiders did, today there would be no more of the people that celebrated Jewish corpses on Trucks. Netanyahu would reproduce Ashurbanipal inscriptions of how every one was slain and let to rot on the ground. Israelis fought back fiercely, but not in a Bronze Age style, and they won, imposing huge material destruction to Hamas and decapitating its leadership. Any other country attacked as Israel was would exterminate the attackers entirely, while Israel tried to be less harmful. Less than a century ago, Jews were exterminated in Europe in industrial complexes built to promote death. To this very day there are fewer Jews than before the Holocaust. The survivors won't let it happen again. Today's Israelis (not only Jews) know if they do not fight back they'd be exterminated. They know "never again is now", and they act accordingly.

A Statement of Conscience on October 7 I will not start by saying ‘as a Muslim’ or ‘as an imam’, but as a human being. On October 7, over 1,200 innocent people were killed in a single day. Families were shot in their homes. Young people out dancing were hunted across open fields. Over 250 people, including children and the elderly, were dragged into Gaza as hostages. I think of a mother hiding in a safe room with her baby’s mouth covered. I think of a father listening as the line went quiet. I think of families who waited month after month for someone to come home, only to receive a coffin. I didn’t need my faith to recognize the evil of what happened. My heart told me first. But I’m a Muslim and an imam, and I owe the world one honest sentence: what was done that day was a crime against God. God teaches that whoever kills one innocent soul, it is as if he had killed all humanity. This day has an author: Yahya Sinwar. He planned it, ordered it, and knew what would follow. Every death of that day and war he started rests on him and Hamas leaders who sat in tunnels and foreign hotels and called slaughter a victory. It rests on every Palestinian leader who cheered, excused, handed out sweets, or said nothing. They chose this. They own it. But Sinwar did not invent himself. He was the fruit of a tree planted almost a century ago by the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas named itself in its founding charter as the Brotherhood’s branch in Palestine. The Brotherhood’s poison is slow. It arrives through study circles, youth camps, charity boxes, and kind words to lonely young men. Drop by drop, it teaches him that his religion is a political party, his neighbour is his enemy, the Jew is the cause of his sorrow, and God is pleased by rage. By the time the gun arrives, the soul is already taken. I have seen this poison in mosques where sermons became rallies and young men could recite slogans but not sit still for a verse on mercy. Every people that let the Brotherhood in has paid in blood and ruined generations. It has never built anything it did not first set on fire. Behind Hamas stands another hand: the IRGC. It was the IRGC’s money, weapons, and training that turned a hateful idea into an army. One calls itself Sunni and the other Shia, and they may curse each other’s creeds, but they are united in what they worship. It is not God. It is power. The same IRGC that armed the killers of October 7 shoots Iranian girls for showing their hair, hangs young men for asking to be free, and has left graves from Tehran to Damascus to Beirut. They speak in God’s name. So did Pharaoh speak in the name of heaven. So let me say this clearly. Hamas and the IRGC are not merely enemies of Islam. That would be too small a charge, as if their crime were only against us. They are enemies of God. God is the Giver of life, yet they deal in death. God calls Himself the Most Merciful, yet they have made cruelty a sacrament. God honoured the children of Adam, yet they look at a child and see a target or a shield. To murder what God created and sign His name to it is the oldest blasphemy. And we Muslims have been too quiet. Some of us were afraid. Some told ourselves it was not our business. Some, God forgive them, felt something other than horror that morning and never confessed it. Silence was the soil this poison grew in. I will not add to it. So on this anniversary, let us say plainly what our scripture already says. The Jews are not our enemies. They are our cousins in Abraham, and their dead were created by the same God who created us. Today belongs to them: the murdered, the hostages, and families who still set a place at the table. To them I say: I am sorry for what was done to you by men who used the words of my prayers. You’re not alone in your grief or remembrance. The enemies of God are those who murder in His name. We know their names. It is time we said them from our own pulpits, in our own voices, before they speak for us again. Imam Tawhidi

To this day lots of people failed to understand "never again is now".
on this day they hunted jewish men, women and children like animals, killing them even with their bare hands. children in front of parents, parents in front of children, sisters in front of brothers we all knew that was but the prologue to horrors that would be unleashed...

If a movement is so intolerant of critique that it experiences criticism as the equivalent of being “knifed,” it will ossify into dogma very quickly, if it hasn’t already. I’m surprised that people who pride themselves on their rationalism can't see this
Replying to @SarahTheHaider
Sorry, but I stand by this. I am generally all in favor of truth-seeking, and I hope my life and previous output reflect that. But I also think that this is a two-way street, and when someone spreads misinformation about you, then you have to respond by saying, clearly, that you think their conduct is unacceptable. I realize there's a high bar for doing that, and I tried to give many, many examples in the article of what Steven did that I think passes that bar (and to err on the side of truth-seeking anyway by addressing all of his arguments). I just don't think it's stable to keep pretending that everything is fine after someone repeatedly knives you. My impression of your past work is that you're not shy about saying when you think someone has crossed a line, and I don't think I'm doing anything you wouldn't do here. Hopefully if you read the article this will become clearer.
