i used to listen to this song in college & there was one line in the chorus i always heard as:
“can anybody find their own?”
i thought that was incredibly profound. aren’t we all in some sense just trying to find our own?
years later i looked up the actual lyrics & realized that wasn’t the line at all. the real lyric was much less interesting. turns out my ears had simply heard exactly what they wanted to hear.
ever since i’ve become a little less interested in checking what an artist actually meant. the meaning that my mind creates is often much more interesting by default. & i now apply that to basically all art not just music.

i remember turning 18 during obama’s second term & being excited to vote for him. there was genuinely something refreshing about him. a modern, intelligent, optimistic dude. how do we lose?
but his post presidency behavior has drastically changed how i see his legacy.
there’s now this constant strain of intellectual pandering, moral righteousness, appeals to expertise, & constant calls to slow down everything while the enlightened adults explain reality all of us. this felt thoughtful before but now feels pedantic & condescending.
quite simply, he basically became hilary clinton in so many ways.
& saying divisive shit like this only makes it all worse. a huge fall from grace which is pretty sad to see.

at this point it’s unclear to me whether google can actually execute on the personal agent product it desperately needs as well as meta has or even openai.
this category requires a very specific product dna which meta spent an enormous amount of money recruiting & acquiring.
you need to collapse absurd technical complexity into something simple, friendly, opinionated, & intuitive then tell a compelling story. this is a non trivial task.
also google’s other problem is that its product surface is so fragmented that i don’t even understand how the various orgs negotiate ownership, distribution, etc. i.e does thus live in gmail or gemini or both? ironically having just the google connector makes the problem much easier for everyone else.
i genuinely can’t remember the last time google shipped a consumer product built from the ground up this complex that felt completely coherent end to end. anyway there should be a four alarm code red inside the company esp given how quickly meta can turn muse into a household name.

the coolest thing about a new technological revolution like ai is that it forces you to rethink nearly every assumption about how the world used to work (kinda like how elon approaches every big problem).
e.g. at one layer personal agents are trying to reshape how ppl manage their day to day lives by radically changing the interface between humans, information, & action.
but at another layer the same class of models are reaching much deeper & understanding the primitive machinery of existence itself that we have no clue about yet.
science fiction is pretty much becoming reality at nearly every layer of the human experience faster than ever before.

We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use.

i don’t get early access to models so i’m just playing around with opus 5.5 but holy crap, the immediate things you notice right away are significantly better, esp writing / the tone, the word choices, the layout wtc
overall, a great improvement. i’ve been using it with claude design a ton too & it absolutely rips.
also the animation design & feel if you’re building any ios stuff is crisp without much direction at all.

i was having dinner with someone recently who asked why i spend so much time reading & posting on x. she had a pretty negative perception of the platform mostly shaped by the mainstream narrative around it.
my answer was simple. x is where the future gets beta tested.
you basically get to watch ppl build things, talk through ideas, show off stuff, & argue about where everything is going, way way before it reaches anyone else.
there really isn’t another surface on the internet quite like it.

gotta give credit where credit is due. openai has probably done more than any lab to drive down the cost of high quality intelligence.
open source obviously matters, but if you look at the full package from model ~quality, availability, latency, reliability, choice across intelligence levels, ease of access, & cost nobody has a better overall offering as a service.
we’ve been enjoying use these models quite a bit.

i have an extra iphone permanently sitting on my desk that exists entirely for the mirror app on my mac.
that way my agent can use my iphone through my desktop exactly like i would, & it can even download an app if necessary from the app store.
which means both my computer & phone are effectively automated through a singlular interface. i can say something as simple as “respond to the seller on ebay” & the agent can decide whether to use the website or just drive the iphone app.
sometimes the app is actually cheaper to operate, more reliable, & works way better than trying to navigate the web.
the coolest part is that i no longer have to think about which device or interface a task lives on. i just state the intent & the agent figures out where/how to execute it.

i was trying to coordinate coffee with someone & realized we were using different personal agents. it’ll be interesting to figure out how agents will talk to each other when they live on different networks.
what becomes the common protocol?
maybe every agent just gets an email / chat address & interoperability mostly works by default through this channel.
or maybe it never really happens & the network effects are too valuable, so we end up with the agent equivalents of imessage with email as a potentially sms type of fallback.
multiplayer & interoperability esp when agents interface & negotiate with each other (e.g. a personal agent interacting with a business agent) is prolly the most fascinating problem space both culturally & technically right now. also huge privacy implications too.

if ppl need use case accounts, prompt libraries, or constant examples of what to do with a product it may actually be a negative sign for its longevity than most ppl would think. it looks like incredible engagement but it also masks as a potential weakness. mostly because products of the past rarely if ever needed manuals like this if you will.
