We are really fucked. • AI has become dangerous (not because it is brilliant but because it has poor judgement, a constitutional inability to reliably follow rules, a surfeit of brute force and too much access to the internet and system permissions). • OpenAI is practically on crime spree, hinting at things to come, and Trump is doing nothing about it. • The media is too caught up in fairytales about extinction. Everybody is talking; nobody is really doing anything. And it’s only going to get worse.

I work in CRISPR discovery research. This is one of the most exaggerated nothing-burgers ever and would be laughed out of the room if a human scientist attempted to publish something like this. (cont.)

disagree with this — the labs have consistently failed to come up with tangible narratives of how the world will improve and have instead resorted to vague “everything will be better” handwaving and “it’s so powerful it could be really bad, which also means it can be really good” to compensate. the ‘abundance’ narrative is also *very* flat outside a very specific and shrinking set of neoliberal TINA wonks and NYT opinion column readers and has fallen flat with the genpop around AI for the same reason it has as a political argument. the problem is not ‘the rhetoric is heated’; nothing’s stopping anyone from being an even-handed voice of reason focused on practical benefits and outcomes. they’re just…not.

In 1956, Cybernetics was renamed "AI" by logic programming experts. Now Trump wants to rename AI again. Let's revive the old name! Modern AI is about neural nets & deep learning, closer to Cybernetics than to 1956 AI. Plus, Cybernetics sounds better than Artificial Intelligence.

At the Bernie-Bannon AI hysteria conference, they allowed a heretical voice on stage—who happens to be one of the smartest & most accomplished technologists on Earth. Jaron Lanier explained the origins of the problem—Minsky et al. anthropomorphizing AI because it sold well. The problem begins with calling it artificial *intelligence* far before you could plausibly argue that it was. Jaron calmly explains how the industry is now essentially a religion focused on building a machine god instead of tools for humans. For example, he says “agents” used to mean agents of humans—but now the industry switched it to “agentic AI” which makes loops of prompts sound like they have motivation or sentience. This is really worth watching. Jaron is a legitimate genius.
