The fact that everyone is anxious about "escaping the permanent underclass" but no one seems to long to "join the permanent overclass" is actually very sweet and hopeful.
Most people don't want to exploit others; they just want to avoid being exploited themselves.

Include Whiplash in here. The guy dedicates himself to his art. Is lambasted, abused, and unfairly punished and remains headstrong. Because of this he becomes one of the best at his craft. At the end he is rewarded. He has an exceptional performance in front of an esteemed audience. His teacher who has basically never been proud of anybody is finally proud of him.
Turns out the director Damien Chazelle said “The ending had always veered a little more on tragic than triumphant… I had always intended it to be a pretty dark ending.”
Like nope, sorry! That’s the most soy limp-wristed interpretation of an uncompromising pursuit of excellence. I don’t care if the director thinks it is a tragedy. Whiplash is a triumphant success story.
