Hire DHH to give every undergrad cs graduation speech for a few years. This is the mindset that is needed to enjoy and thrive in what comes next with building software.
My god this is such a good speech that every SWE needs to hear. You know what? Every person should hear it Keep the happy memories, eyes on the reality, be excited about the future. That’s the best that anyone can do

on uploading human consciousness
Replying to @nabeelqu
I've recently thought about this and arrived at a question to think about: when I go to sleep, how do I know that it's actually me that wakes up? I lose consciousness when i go to sleep and find myself with it when I wake up.

few mins deep into the calendars rabbit hole, there are some really surprising facts - during 8th century BCE: Romans used a 10 month calendar spanning March to December with 304 days. The ~60 day winter period b/w dec & mar wasn't divided into named months. 1/
weird that september, october, november and december aren't the 7th to 10th months of the year respectively

- a nerd like me would say, that's still 3 days drift every 10,000 years. But earth's orbit and length of year aren't exactly constant, so actual length of solar might slightly vary over thousands of years. 8/

- also some other weird facts: 46 BCE had ~ 445 days in their calendar. For several centuries before that, a calendar year only had ~355 days - when gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582: 10 days were skipped between Oct 4th and Oct 15th. So 1582 only had 355 calendar days 9/

the longtermism that i have, which seems to me casual, natural, intuitive and obvious, is to spend like 0.1% of the time thinking more than 5 lifetimes ahead, about 40% of the time thinking 1 lifetime ahead, and about 60% of the time thinking about the next ~50 years

my review:
now reading: Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. Did you know that Siddhartha in Sanskrit means one who has realized his goal/aim?

If you look up, that's moon and venus side by side today. Since both are lit by the sun, a fun thing to think about is, if sun were to dissappear suddenly which one of these two would dissappear first?

i don't know if this is already a thing but similar to cooking competitions there should be accompanying timed 'doing the (cleaning) dishes' competitions. would be so fun to watch

I personally believe there is a much greater than 10% chance that AI relieves the burden of disease and ushers in a post-scarcity Star Trek future of abundance and unimaginable human flourishing and scientific discovery. I'm very grateful to have colleagues who have been thinking deeply about alignment, and working on it for a very long time, to prevent bad futures and make sure we get to good outcomes for humanity.
