Hired to record a seemingly routine conversation between a young couple in San Francisco’s Union Square, Harry becomes increasingly disturbed by what he hears forces him to confront the possibility that his work may once again have deadly consequences. Haunted by a previous surveillance assignment that ended tragically, Harry’s professional detachment slowly gives way to paranoia, guilt and moral anxiety. What makes the film extraordinary is how Coppola turns sound itself into suspense. The conversations are repeatedly replayed, isolated and reconstructed, with small changes in perspective completely altering their meaning. We experience the story almost entirely through Harry’s act of listening, making us question not only what he hears, but whether he can still trust his own interpretation of it. Gene Hackman gives one of his most restrained performances, creating a character whose loneliness is as important as his paranoia. Harry wants to remain invisible, yet the more he listens to others, the more he is forced to confront himself.
