While we talk and he praises chocolate from Ecuador, many Teslas and other EVs, incl. buses, are around us, making the city quieter and less polluted.

The cinnamon in your cabinet is almost certainly cassia, which is a different plant. Real cinnamon, the kind sold as Ceylon or true cinnamon, comes from Cinnamomum verum and it's grown mostly in Sri Lanka. Nearly everything sold in America as cinnamon is cassia, one of 3 related species grown in Indonesia, China and Vietnam. FDA does not require the label to tell you which one is in the jar, so most of the time it just says cinnamon. You can tell them apart by looking at a stick. Cassia is one thick hard curl of bark that you could hit someone with. Ceylon is thin and layered like a cigar and it crumbles when you press it. They don't taste the same. Cassia is hot and aggressive and it's what American baked goods are built around. Ceylon is lighter and more floral. A small jar of it costs 3 to 4 times as much per ounce as regular cinnamon, but buy it in a bag and it's about the same price. McCormick's regular cinnamon is harvested in Indonesia, which makes it cassia. Their gourmet jar is Saigon cinnamon from Vietnam, and that's cassia too.

13 years ago, my team at NVIDIA was helping Audi develop vision systems for self parking at that time. The video itself still looked impressive, even today, especially considering the compute was tiny at that time. Lots of CUDA graph optimization went into it to make it run — like separable convolutions that serve as bedrocks of inference engine today. It sounds trivial today but backend we had to rearchitect how GPU reads camera frames isochronously without causing back pressure and jitters. Yet, after the demo we stopped working on it. It didn’t go anything except making video and playing it at all-hands. Back then, I had a code repo for “cool-demo-but-never-shipped”. It’s a graveyard. Something I noticed while shopping at Zara in Barcelona: The customer base feels much more diverse in terms of age. In Germany, Zara seems to attract mostly younger people, while here in Spain, you see a mix of young and older generations. Spanish people seem to have a different approach to fashion. They often appear more stylish and put-together in their everyday outfits, whereas Germans tend to dress more practically and casually. It’s fascinating how fashion culture and personal style can differ so much between countries, even when shopping at the same brand.

I just found out that until October 1, taxi drivers in Spain were legally allowed to drive without a seatbelt in cities while on duty. The official reasons: constant stops, short trips, and the idea that a belt would slow them down if a passenger attacked them. That exemption is finally ending. From next month they have to buckle up like everyone else or face a €200 fine and 4 license points. Still can’t quite believe this was the law for decades.
