After losing a war in 494 BC, the ancient Chinese King Goujian of Yue rebuilt his population with new marriage laws: - If a daughter was single at 17 or a son at 20, the parents were held guilty of a crime. - Old men couldn't marry young women, and young men couldn't marry old ones. - Every birth came with a state gift of two jars of wine and a dog for a boy, and two jars of wine and a pig for a girl. Twenty years later, Yue conquered the kingdom that had beaten it.

Were there any celibate priests or monks? Or did they just run off to hide in caves in the mountains? Lose the mendicants and you could be losing an expert elite. Or maybe just a bunch of charlatans, but they also could also be useful as counter-charlatans.

Some people never have enough of mud. Other, never enough of muck. Even if it can only be envisioned, and posted, on social media.
