people like insisting that this is bc its narrated from ilya's pov/that it means shane loves the game of hockey not the outer environment or wtv, but personally i think its been quite clear it's just an ignorant and thoughtless bit of characterization
this is crazy cuz you know shane knew about the darker side from day one, he probably got lectures upon lectures from yuna, how his race will always affect the perception of him . Probably had been hearing slurs from day 1.
