The Macedonian believers were not giving out of comfort or abundance. They were facing deep poverty, yet their hearts were so full of grace that their generosity overflowed. Their story reminds us that true giving does not begin with how much we have in our hands, but with what God has done in our hearts. Redemption in One Verse We give because Jesus gave first. In 2 Corinthians 8:9, Paul captures the beauty of the gospel using the language of riches and poverty: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” In one sentence, Paul shows us the whole story of redemption: He was rich: Jesus had all the glory, joy, and perfection of heaven. THE CROSS: THE GREATEST MIRACLE OF ALL “Show me a miracle, and I’ll believe.” That claim is one of scepticism’s greatest deceptions. Spectacular signs do not soften a hardened heart. History makes this clear, and Israel’s wilderness journey is a powerful example. The Wilderness: When Miracles Were Despised The Israelites lived amid the supernatural. They crossed a divided sea and received miraculous bread from heaven each day. Yet how did they respond in the end? Numbers 21:5 (NKJV): “And the people spoke against God and against Moses: ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.’“ They saw a daily miracle and called it “worthless.” Because of their rebellion, judgment came through venomous snakes. Corinth was a busy, status-driven city that prized polished rhetoric, public recognition, and dramatic spiritual displays. Many wanted a performance. Paul corrected this dangerous mindset by reminding them that true spiritual power was not a theatrical display designed to entertain or persuade sceptics. 2 Corinthians 12:12 (ESV): “The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works.” Notice Paul’s keyword: patience, or endurance. In the early church, miracles flowed quietly and humbly from God’s grace through Paul’s suffering; they were not commercialised stage performances. The 21st-Century Reality If you claim Christ today, you do not need to chase signs and wonders. Anyone trying to sell you a “miracle” in the 21st century is selling deception. You are already living in a miracle. Your education, health, work, breath, and above all, the blood of Jesus Christ covering your life, are enough. When you grasp the agonising cost Christ paid for us, you stop demanding lesser signs from God. Whatever your denomination or church, no greater miracle has ever been given to humanity than the DEATH AND RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST—given with immeasurable patience, perfect humility, and brutal endurance. The Cross is sufficient.

🚨 THE ILLUSION OF THE “SELF-MADE” BELIEVER It’s easy to look at our resources, talents, opportunities, or bank accounts and feel proud. After all, we worked hard for these things, didn’t we? But Paul gently brings us back to the truth in 1 Corinthians 4:7: “What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?” Everything we are, everything we have, and even every breath we take is a gift from God. When we understand that we own nothing outright, but are simply entrusted with God’s blessings, pride gives way to gratitude. The Ultimate Example of Generosity If we want to know what to do with what we’ve freely received, we only need to look at Jesus. Paul captures Christ’s generosity beautifully in 2 Corinthians 8:9: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” Jesus held the wealth of the universe, yet He did not hold it back. He poured it out. He stepped out of heaven and entered poverty so that we could receive eternal life. Heaven’s way is not accumulation; it is generosity. From Privilege to Mission This is why Paul encouraged the Corinthian church—and why we are still encouraged today—to give to those in need (2 Corinthians 8 and 9). True stewardship is not simply about paying dues to a church. It is about looking at the gifts in our hands and asking, “How can I use this to look more like Jesus?” Stewardship and mission belong together: – The Mission: Reaching the world with God’s love. – The Stewardship: Using our God-given time, talents, and resources to help make that mission possible. Reflection for today: If everything you have is a gift, how can you use your “riches” today to bless someone else?
