Very hard to keep expectations low when you're getting reads on your script. But you should.

Still here trying to get my movies made. What have I learned? Try your best, write stories that excite you, throw the darts, don't beat yourself up ever, and don't attach self worth to success. Kindness and character is all that matters, not how many movies you've made.

Whatever change is happening in the movie industry, writers just have to write their stories. Stop looking for new technology. Tell the story. Put in the work. Good writing is good translation of idea from mind to page.

I personally would never get behind a script that had A.I. write any portion of it. Not my thing. Hard enough to get a movie made, would never back one that didn't have a true writer who worked hard, rewrites, polishes, doing the work, and finding the magic along the way.

Using A.I. as a screenwriter is literally killing your chances of making it in a very difficult business to make it in, even with all the talent and craft. All you've got is your voice, and passion. Those are the things that make writing worthwhile and fighting for your story.

If your dream was to be a writer why are you using A.I. to write for you? The art of the written story has been around for 4,000 years. It needs you, an individual with human experience, tough or good, to tell it. Your unique life makes unique ideas, details, characters.

If you let A.I. do your writing for you, you are putting yourself at a major disadvantage. Screenwriting is a craft that involves rewrites, feedback, trying out story threads that sometimes don't work that lead you to a great scene or moment of dialogue. Immediacy will hurt you

Would you rather make a movie that a lot of people see and hate, or make a movie that people though was incredible but rarely got seen at all?

People don't like to talk about how hard it is to make a living pursuing a career in the movies, in screenwriting. To say it out loud is to project weakness. Is to show things aren't going as well. That people only hire those who project success. It is damn hard and that's ok

Not sure why people have a problem with Aaron Sorkin's masterful directing in Social Reckoning. Cameras moving, blocking, pace, making taking heads absolutely fascinating. Somehow that's the sticking point? Most audience members don't think about the "directing". It's story.

The discourse is real. And it's what it's about. Movies leading to conversations. Even when you dislike or they make you uncomfortable.
Tom Cruise championing a film that stresses the importance of the climate crisis, a true original film that is not afraid of advocating the issues in our world, is something worth supporting. The hatred of this film feels a lot like people (or corps) wanting to bury the message

For the record, I thought Aaron Sorkin's directing in The Social Reckoning is the best of his career. Story, script and directing came together. Filmmaking was invisible. Just engaged in story. Masterful.

I think there's too much guilt around taking breaks as a writer. Not working hard enough. Not doing enough. It's so hard to make it, that people want to blame hard work, or just one script away (guilty of this!). But it is okay to lose inspiration & let it return. On its own.

The movie industry can be a hard pursuit. I have seen it beat down so many people. Not the creative element. But the silence. The rejection. The no income. No work. No schedule. Forever chasing your tail feeling. That's all I wanted to say. Acknowledge how difficult it can be

Keep seeing a lot of movies that aren't performing well at the box office and people dislike them before even seeing them. Go support movies. Original movies. Craftsmanship. Real filmmakers. Jobs. Industry. It's fun to go out and watch a movie.

THE SOCIAL RECKONING was fantastic. 10/10. Aaron Sorkin proves he can direct as well as he can write, and he can land a poignant bio-pic about the dangers of the tech world. Highly recommend in theaters. Bravo to Mikey Madison's performance.

I do wonder if the undeniable environmental message of Digger, both urgent, tough to swallow, is why so many people are refusing to give it a chance or find issues with an unbelievable performance from Tom Cruise and insane blocking & direting from Alejandro Inarritu. Thoughts:

...I feel hate is reserved for movies that bother people on a moral level. Otherwise you have a lukewarm reaction. It's boring. It's whatever. There's plenty of interesting elements to pick out. But I do wonder if Digger forces its audience to actually look inward about greed-

-about society's problems, about how we treat our natural world. My 2 cents. I am always a fan of original movies and I like when artists take risks, and I also like when the biggest movie star on the planet and one of the all time most interesting director go for a message.
