Japan is preparing to put one of the world's biggest bond markets on blockchain.
Japan's Financial Services Agency, Finance Ministry, and Bank of Japan are reportedly forming a study group to explore blockchain-based settlement for stocks and government bonds.
The development plan is expected in early 2027, with live operations targeted for the early 2030s.
The focus goes beyond extending trading hours. Japan is looking at tokenizing settlement itself, including the use of central bank reserves as wholesale digital currency to reduce the time required to settle transactions.
Japanese stocks currently settle on a T+2 basis, while government bonds also require multiple days. A blockchain-based system could potentially move settlement toward a continuous, 24/7 model.
The push also comes as institutional interest in digital assets continues to grow, while private companies are already developing tokenized securities infrastructure.
If implemented, Japan could be laying the foundation for a faster and more digitally native financial market
