Today I learned about the Double Empathy Problem: Neurotypical people get along with neurotypical people, and autistic people get along with autistic people, but neurotypical people and autistic people… uh oh!
When I get strong pushback about something I say or do that feels like a natural and true expression of myself, I like to feel through the intense emotions that arise and not rush that process.
I then consider what shadows in my own awareness have been shown to me. It helps me to review the occurrence from the perspective of a neutral third-party observer: "He said this, and that caused others to view him as that and that." When I help myself step away from the impulse to never see myself as in the wrong, I notice lessons from the experience rather than fixate on getting the jury in my head to deem me not guilty.
This process can get tricky because I have an inclination to cede my own inner authority to others' judgment - "You see me better than I see me. I am what you say I am." - which is just another plea to the internal jury. Neither ignoring others' feedback nor abdicating my sense of self to it is a path that I get to practice walking. I see these occurrences as a natural consequence of the desires to take up space in the world and affect others just as they affect me. When my behavior pokes and prods others, it's only right for them to say "ouch".
I often get curious about women's experiences. These curiosities come from my thoughts, from conversation, from life. I started writing them down and now I have 100 of them! Here they are:
If you want something from someone else, you can give it to yourself. You can drop the focus on what the other person is or isn't doing and pour that wonderful attention back into you, and that entire process of realization and redirection can feel so good.
I love all retweets thank you thank you and I wonder if it's better now to append a little text something to those shares and make them quote tweets instead so that they're all in the same feed. Things like . or rt or an emoji all suffice to make something a quote tweet.
