Today we mark October 7th - where we remember those who were killed, and look towards a brighter future.

Please know that neither I nor any member of the council’s Executive supported the national Green Party conference motion seeking to describe Zionism as racism.

I recognise how difficult the past few days have been for members of the Jewish community in Southwark and beyond. This is already a deeply painful time for many, as we mark the anniversary of the appalling attacks of October 7th.

When I saw the Nova music festival site, the impact of October 7th hit home. Three years on, the violence continues, and we have seen an appalling rise in antisemitism here and around the world. We must stand with the Jewish community, stamp out antisemitism, and work for peace.

This weekend, join Octobre Rose for a special Black History Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Event at Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre. Octobre Rose is a community initiative led by Gabonese women, supported by public health professionals, community organisations, and leisure services. They raise awareness of breast cancer through health checks, fitness, and wellbeing activities. Each October, they deliver a community-focused health and wellbeing event which aims to increase cancer awareness, improve access to preventative health interventions, and encourage long-term engagement in healthier lifestyles. A second event will be at Camberwell Leisure Centre on Saturday 24 October, 10am to 5pm. Funded by our Black History Month grant.

Wow. Today, the new measures that @libdems campaigned for to create a specific category of domestic abuse offender in the law have come into force. Thank you to all those survivors and charities (and govt) who fought for this change that will keep victims safer for the future.
