Reminder to myself: don't promote my latest article on social while also looking for a cheese-night cocktail.
That's how my Instagram followers almost just ended up with a recipe for an autumn Old Fashioned (which they might have loved, but also might have been confused by).
$500 "Obamacare refund” checks are going out.
No, they’re not tax refunds. And no, you didn’t pay a separate $500 fee that’s now being returned.
Here’s who should expect one, where the money came from, and what you need to know:

Y'ALL.
It has been a mostly terrible week (just keeping it real here).
But IRS came through with some excellent news for a client who has been on a constant struggle bus of late. I'm so happy for her! 🎉
It's a guest post on Taxgirl!
Angeline Balsitis, EA, timed 188 calls she made to the IRS.
Total: 92 hours.
Waiting: 74 hours.
Much of the waiting happened AFTER an IRS employee answered. Her data, charts & takeaways:

The IRS is looking for VITA/TCE volunteers for filing season.
Last year, I said yes—and ended up preparing tax returns in rural Alaska, traveling by single-engine plane and snowmobile. ❄️

Yet another taxpayer whose advisor helped her create and fund an irrevocable trust.
If your "advisory" business model is simply selling your client something you've heard about but don't actually understand, please stop (esp if it's UPL).
Client: I don’t understand why the IRS sends out automated letters without updating status... Is this their normal way of doing business?
Me: You have no idea.
Your reminder that just because a business tacks the word "regulatory" onto a fee doesn't mean it's a government tax or fee.
Often, it's just the cost of doing business, with no caps or restrictions on how much they can or will charge. (See cell phone companies, particularly.)
I have the flu and need to lie down.
Kid: But the Phillies are doing good while you are watching.
Me: I can't be responsible for that today.
I rest. Rays score 2. Clearly, I have to watch now.

More than 40 years later, investigators have uncovered a possible new connection to the unsolved Tylenol murders. And there’s a tax angle.
It involves longtime person of interest James Lewis.
I went down the rabbit hole:
