A fundraising campaign has been launched in memory of Kingswinford man Jim Dinan, a West Midlands Police officer of 24 years and advocate for menโs mental health, who died unexpectedly aged 50.
Mr Dinan died in his sleep on Saturday, August 8, while taking pain medication for a back problem, friends and family said.
They said he had otherwise been in good health and had been looking forward to an early retirement, with plans to spend more time with his wife Bel and their two children, aged 18 and 13.
During more than two decades with West Midlands Police, Mr Dinan was known among colleagues for his commitment to helping others.
His family said he spoke warmly about his work and regarded his team and wider colleagues as a second family.
In July last year, he helped set up the Guardians Guild, a non-profit group supporting menโs mental health in the Kingswinford and Stourbridge areas.
The group holds monthly gatherings intended to give men an informal setting in which to talk, make friends and build support networks before reaching crisis point. Activities have included walks, pub visits and curry nights.
Friends said Mr Dinan believed it was important for men to be able to speak openly about their feelings and seek support when needed.
A memorial and fundraising appeal has now been set up to support the future, education and wellbeing of his children.
His family and friends said they hoped the campaign would honour his public service, his work to support menโs mental health and the impact he had on the Kingswinford community.
A spokesperson said: "Above all else, Jim was a fiercely devoted family man.
"Nothing meant more to him than his wife, Bel, and their two children, aged 18 and 13.โ
"He was a playful, loving father who would spend hours watching his children's dance routines, talking about their days and cooking for them."
