49ers Bolster Receiver Depth, Add Veteran Brandin Cooks to Practice Squad
The 49ers' wide receiver room is banged up. Rookie De'Zhaun Stribling is on injured reserve with an ankle injury. In the team's Week 2 blowout win over the Dolphins, Mike Evans was held out for extra rest along with veterans Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle, but Evans was later listed as questionable to return with a hip injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Evans' status will be monitored throughout the week. Demarcus Robinson also suffered a high-ankle sprain in the win and will be sidelined three to six weeks.
Cooks will try to pick up the new playbook and mesh with the team quickly, but it's unclear if he'll learn enough to be elevated and active for the Week 3 game against the Cardinals.
If Cooks is elevated and activated, it will be his 13th NFL season. New Orleans drafted him in the first round in 2014, and he has since played for the Patriots, Rams, Texans, Cowboys and Bills.
Over 12 seasons, Cooks has played 173 games with 9,811 receiving yards and 60 touchdowns. He needs 189 more yards to become the 58th player in NFL history to reach 10,000 career receiving yards.
