Powerful surf breached the dunes near Pea Island, pouring across N.C. 12 and leaving roughly 500 feet of highway undermined or broken apart.
The road is impassable in the area, with deep sand and several feet of water reported in some spots. All three Ocracoke ferry routes were suspended as flooding and overwash hit the coast.
And it may not be over. More overwash is possible with additional high tides.
