We built a tiny Hacktoberfest challenge for people who keep saying: "i want to contribute to open source, but i don't know where to start" 7 days. 5-15 mins a day. no coding required. one real PR each day. start here 👇 devops-daily.com/hacktoberfe…

AI use is exploding. Trust isn't. Developers using AI: 44% in 2023, 79% in 2025 (Stack Overflow survey). People learning to code who trust AI accuracy: 49.1% in 2024, 37.4% in 2025. We're not rejecting AI. We're getting pickier about it.

€100,000 gross salary. Same job, 20 European countries. Take-home pay goes from €53,000 in Belgium to €86,700 in Bulgaria. That is €33,700 a year for the same gross. 2026 estimates: single, no children, employee social security and income tax.

Tutorials. College. First job. Senior dev. Then the vibe coding era. Funny because the drop is optional. The model writes the code. It does not know why prod broke at 3am. That is still Linux, networking and reading logs. Use the tools. Keep the curve.

Junior dev hiring is reportedly down 60 to 70 percent since 2022. We counted 15 years of Hacker News job posts to see what happened to junior ops roles. 3,386 ops postings. 17 asked for a junior. The bottom rung was missing long before AI. devops-daily.com/posts/the-j…

AI does not remove the bottleneck. It moves it. Code output goes up. Review, tests and ownership do not scale at the same rate. The queue does not disappear. It forms further down the line. Faster typing is not faster delivery.
14
Cloudflare cut their DNS cache from 953 bytes per entry to 420. At 250 billion entries that is 100+ TB of memory freed across the fleet, and inserts got 43% faster, not slower. Profile first, then optimise the unit that multiplies.
33
50 DevOps terms, one cheat sheet. DNS, artifacts, feature flags, pods, operators, error budgets, least privilege. Not for memorizing. For the meeting moment when someone says "SLO" and you want the one-line version. Save it, share it with your team's junior.
24
Your database is fast. Your API is slow. Both are true. The request queues for a connection before the query starts: API latency = pool wait + query time + everything else The tell: p99 rising, query time flat, DB CPU normal. Don't scale until you know what it's waiting for.
17
Before you accept an offer, interview the pager: - How many people share the rotation? - How many pages last month? How many woke someone? - Can this team fix what pages it? - What follows a bad night? Vague answers are the answer. Ask for last month's reality, not the policy.
16
Same neighborhood of work. Very different hiring markets. US median total comp (2025 Stack Overflow survey): Sysadmin: $83k, 15 yrs DevOps engineer: $165k, 13 yrs Cloud infra: $189k, 12 yrs Titles do not cause pay. Understand the level before you negotiate the number.
31
RED, USE, and the Four Golden Signals are not competing frameworks. They answer different questions. Golden Signals: are users affected? RED: is this service slower or failing? USE: which resource is busy or queued? Detect. Localize. Inspect. Start where the symptom lives.
12
One COPY . . can rebuild everything. Docker cache is a chain: the first changed layer invalidates every layer after it. Copy your app before npm ci and you reinstall dependencies on every code change. Copy manifests. Install. Copy source. Build. In that order.
27
"The API is slow" is not a diagnosis. One request has five phases: DNS, TCP, TLS, server wait, body transfer. curl timestamps all of them for free. Subtract neighbors, find the slow phase, then go fix that one.

AI can write the YAML. You own the blast radius. A model can draft the plan, generate the change, suggest tests, and propose a rollout. It cannot own permissions, failure cases, or the decision to ship. Automate output. Never outsource accountability.

DevOps Daily is growing, and there are three things we cannot do well enough on our own. SEO. Marketing and growth. Design. Part time or contract, could become long term. Remote, flexible hours. We care what you have shipped, not where you worked. Reply or DM. Reposts help.
25
2022: review a plan with 23 resources to add, check the runbook, watch the dashboards, approve. 2026: review 14,000 lines of AI-generated YAML and a plan with 117 resources, in the same afternoon. The volume changed. The signature at the end is still yours.
19
Terraform does not compare your code to your cloud. It compares your code to its memory of your cloud, and refreshes that memory first. That third thing is state. Nearly every confusing plan is those three disagreeing: config ≠ state → change state ≠ remote → drift
20
2016: VMware, Jenkins, Chef, Nagios, Splunk. 2026: Kubernetes, Terraform, Argo, Prometheus, Vault. Every tool on that list changed. The job did not. You are still trying to ship safely and find out quickly when you broke something. The complexity moved. It did not leave.
38
Your DevOps resume gets read twice. First by a keyword filter that does not know Terraform and OpenTofu are related, or that Docker and Podman do the same job. It matches literal strings. Then by a human or a model that wants evidence. Write exact nouns. Then prove them.

42
Interview question: dashboards green, users still get 502s. Your first 10 minutes? Weak answers name tools. Strong ones name boundaries: DNS, LB, ingress, service, pod, dependency. Find where the request stops. And do not restart the pod. That is the evidence.
2
45
The DevOps roadmap: Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS, CI/CD. The actual week: YAML whitespace, a cert that expired at 2am, a DNS record nobody owns, and an IAM policy quietly saying no. If your job looks nothing like the roadmap, you are not behind. That is the job.

What DevOps job ads mention, across 38,910 postings: Kubernetes 56%, Python 56%, Terraform 51%. Git: 25%. Three in four DevOps jobs with no Git? Obviously not. It ranks low because it is assumed. These rank what recruiters type, not what the job needs.

DevOps in one picture. Plan, code, build, test, release, deploy, operate, improve. Most teams are strong up to deploy. Operate and improve are where the loop actually closes, and they are the first two cut when the quarter gets tight.
22
Almost nobody does these in order. Most start at step 5, because Docker and Kubernetes are the fun part. Then something breaks at 3am and they go back and learn step 1 properly. Linux and networking aren't the prerequisite. They're what you debug with. devops-daily.com/roadmap

Whatever we're calling it this year, most of it is a POST and a timer wearing a trench coat. Fine, until the receiver is down and nobody wrote the retry logic. Our sponsor Svix does this bit properly: devops-daily.com/posts/relia…
