The complainant, R Selvaraj (42) of Narasinga Nallur, said in his complaint that he had noticed the banner near the VM Chatram flyover on Saturday while passing by the area. “The banner outside the Dindigul Kalyana Biryani shop showed Lord Ganesha eating biryani. The banner was put up with an intention to insult the religious sentiments of Hindus,” he claimed. Based on the complaint, the police conducted an inquiry and arrested M Jeyanth (30) of KTC Nagar, the owner of the biryani shop under Section 299 of BNS.

The group had gathered under a bridge on the Cheranmahadevi-Kooniyur road around 8.50 pm to cut a cake and celebrate Naveen’s birthday. Some of them were allegedly carrying sickles and were preparing to engage in criminal activities. “On receiving information, the police patrol team rushed to the spot. On seeing the police, the group fled the spot. However, police managed to nab eight of them. A case was registered at Cheranmahadevi police station and further legal action is under way,” said the police.

Police also seized 12 two-wheelers from the spot. “Efforts are on to identify and arrest the others who fled from the scene,” the police said. Naveen, who is currently lodged in prison, faces several murder cases in different districts. One of the cases relates to the murder of Scheduled Caste man Deepak Raja, which triggered communal tension in southern districts in 2024. He was later detained under Goondas Act. In March this year, some MBC rowdies who went on a sickle-attack spree in Nanguneri Perumpathu village killing two persons and causing grievous cut injuries several other residents, allegedly raised slogans praising Naveen and his community. Police had also taken legal action against some youths for hailing his alleged crimes on social media. The posters featuring Naveen with violent slogans have also been seen in Tirunelveli district during family functions and festivals.

According to sources, passengers told the police that the driver appeared tired and sleepy just before the accident. Sources also said there were no tyre marks on the road, indicating that brakes may not have been applied to avert the accident. “However, since the driver is critical, he is unable to talk to the police. Only after an inquiry with him will we get a clear picture about the accident,” police sources said. Azhuthakanni river is one of the tributaries of Chitraru river which further empties into Thamirabarani. Since there was no water flowing in the river due to the failure of southwest monsoon, a major disaster was avoided. Courtallam police registered a case and launched a probe.

Honour killing attempt: The accused person was identified as E Murugan from Tirunelveli district. The victims are T Akash (21), a native of Alangulam, and his wife Sushmitha (20). After Murugan’s stern opposition to her marriage with Akash, Sushmitha left his house and took refuge in Akash’s house, which subsequently resulted in their marriage. The couple was studying at a private college located at Idaikal village in Tirunelveli district when they fell in love. After completing their studies last year, they continued to be in touch with each other.
When the couple decided to marry, Sushmitha told her parents about it, but they opposed the marriage and warned her, citing caste differences. Despite that, both got married and shifted to a rental house in Sivagamipuram village four months ago. Murugan, who had confronted his daughter previously, had suddenly begun visiting her in recent weeks. He also bought groceries and a grinder for the couple and insisted that his daughter visit his house at Ariyanayagipuram. However, Sushmitha, allegedly feeling something fishy, refused to go there, which irked Murugan.
On Thursday, he visited Akash’s house carrying a sickle. After a few minutes of conversation, Murugan suddenly began attacking Akash on his head, hand and legs, grievously injuring him. He also attacked his daughter before fleeing the crime scene on his two-wheeler.
