Dr Rosemary Clarke shared how Scotland is taking a strategic approach to reducing cardiovascular disease, from a national prevention toolkit and targeted case-finding in deprived communities to work towards standardised lipid testing across NHS Scotland. Encouraging progress with measurable impact and a continued focus on prevention, equity and improving outcomes. #hukconf #lipids

Excellent presentation from Dr Amrita Jesurasa highlighting Wales’ ambitious whole-system approach to CVD prevention. Key messages included: ❤️ CVD accounts for 27% of deaths in Wales. ❤️ Up to 80% of premature CVD deaths are preventable. ❤️ The ABCD Plus approach brings together atrial fibrillation, blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, alongside lifestyle and wider determinants of health. ❤️ Prevention is being embedded within the All Wales Diabetes Prevention Programme, with a strong focus on multidisciplinary working and reducing health inequalities. Panel discussion: Learning across the four UK nations on CVD prevention One of the strongest messages from today’s discussion was that no single profession can deliver cardiovascular prevention alone. The panel highlighted how building stronger multidisciplinary teams can increase access to cholesterol testing and improve long-term management, with particular recognition of making better use of the expertise of nurses and pharmacists. Some of the key takeaways: 📍 Reducing inequalities Scotland’s CVD Risk Factors Toolkit has taken prevention into communities through initiatives such as community events and football grounds, identifying many people who may benefit from statins. The challenge now is how to keep those individuals engaged in long-term care. 📱 Digital platforms have an important role—but aren’t the whole answer • Wales: Developing the NHS App as a single trusted source while recognising digital exclusion and ensuring human support remains central. • Scotland: NHS Inform providing digital support for blood pressure and atrial fibrillation. • Northern Ireland: My Care within the EPIC system supporting integrated care. • England: Ongoing work to improve the NHS App experience, particularly for people living with multiple long-term conditions where separate disease-specific apps can fragment care. 💡 An interesting discussion centred on engaging younger people with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), particularly men in their 20s, where digital approaches may offer new opportunities. Great overview from Prof Maciej Banach at #HEARTUK highlighting that residual cardiovascular risk extends beyond LDL-C alone. Key messages included the importance of considering triglycerides, inflammation, Lp(a) and other risk modifiers alongside traditional risk assessment, as well as emerging therapies targeting APOC3 in hypertriglyceridaemia. #hukconf #lipids

New data presented by Dr Bilal Bashir explored the relationship between hypertriglyceridaemia and cardiovascular risk using the UK CPRD database. Key takeaways: • Hypertriglyceridaemia was associated with increased cardiovascular risk, but the pattern differed between primary and secondary prevention. • Risk also varied across different vascular territories, highlighting that triglyceride-related risk is not uniform. • The findings support the need for population-specific and vascular territory-specific risk assessment, moving beyond LDL-C alone.
