You know, if I was skilled enough, *I* would have my real crash outs disguised as high-brow references.
This is not a dig at @SarahTheHaider. I just want to let people know that having read the @slatestarcodex piece, it is clearly a extended joke based on the musical Hamilton. This is what the reference to duels, and an itemized list of disagreements is about. It's a little tone deaf but it's actually quite sweet in its admiration for Pinker.

It only scores 9.3% on "All the Math We Can Think Of Bench"
372 hits out of 4k seems rather low granted only 3hrs per problem was spent. Would be interesting to know the failures and which families are most resistant.

It looks like OpenAI plans to release hundreds of newly solved math problems today in a huge post to GitHub. Some of them potentially quite significant. This would explain the mass amount of papers posted last night as people try to publish ahead of it. Reporting from WIRED.

Le Chaton Fat actually dropped!! We memed him into existence!
Meet Mistral Large 4, aka Le Chonk. • 1T parameters, natively multimodal. 49B active. It is the best open weights model from US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks. • State-of-the-art on critical workloads, including cyber defense, manufacturing and finance and it surpasses closed frontier models on visual grounding. • Forged in Europe end-to-end and is deployable from Europe via our own Mistral Cloud infrastructure. • Available to all via API today. Working with cybersecurity partners privately. Open weights release end of October.

Wait, people consider financially supporting someone else to be the most cheating? What if I have to send money to an ex?
on glosso.ink, I have both a 'how rationalist are you' quiz and also a 'how poly are you' quiz. Here's how the relationship looks in my data:

This is a strange hell. Imagine waking up in a realm where you are forced to perform 200 years of alignment research (which to you proceeds at normal speed). You don't get to die. And you receive feedback at profoundly infrequent rates.
Replying to @lumpenspace
one possible real pivotal act plan I've heard is to upload the brains of alignment researchers, run them at 50X speed and have them do something. although it makes you wonder why EY wouldn't just say that if that's actually their plan

I feel bad for kids whose parents don't love them times a strongly inaccessible cardinal.
it’s countable. it’s a nice exercise to show that any well-ordered subset of the reals is countable. even under laws of physics that allow hypertasks, so you can say i love you increasingly quickly, you can still only say it at most countably many times before the end of time

The only question being whether "inaccessible" literally means "you can't have them -- not for you!"

Something that has slowly dawned on me as I read through MIRI research posts on LW: * A post presents a problem. * Commenters quickly propose the most obvious next step to solving it. * Replies to that comment bring up all the ways in which that could fail or be wrong. * Everyone agrees "yeah, you're right, it's clearly hopeless."

I'm trying to think if there even are any high-status rationalists who haven't had dirt reported about them. Maybe Scott Alexander? I don't know of anything besides maybe his opinions (but that's the baseline). I don't think he's even married to a CEO or wealthy EA donor.

One thing high status people apparently cannot purchase is privacy. Their sex lives will inevitably face tremendous scrutiny.

Aella's "hot-or-not" rankings, but instead of people's faces you have to click the right or the left alignment paper.
x.com/mimi10v3/status/210573… we have a little data here, albeit it's unreliable. another route is to rank AI alignment researchers from best to worst, and then try to figure out which are into CNC. this runs into the issue that in many cases, CNC preferences & behavior are private.

I am a lab-leak truther for this particular outbreak.
Russian authorities are responding to an incident in which a suspected dangerous infection was released as a result of a laboratory accident in Siberia and a researcher died. cnn.it/3Ubwb4F

The way that people just suddenly get axed because people were saying bad things about them online is concerning. It's too abrupt.

Cancel culture strikes again. Whatever. If these are the social norms they find worth enforcing at cost, they can have a culture downstream of those incentives. Personally I do not give a fuck and think it’s a pathetic culture.

Few will know this, but John Wentworth is the individual I gave the nickname "Pessimistic John" many years back. He's the foil to "Optimistic Paul."
We have withdrawn our grant recommendation to John Wentworth from the 2026 S-Process Grant Round. After we posted our announcement on Sept 30, public statements by Mr. Wentworth came to our attention which we found objectionable, disturbing, and contrary to the values of SFF. A Speculation Grant to Mr. Wentworth was approved and disbursed earlier in the year, prior to SFF becoming aware of his statements. The Funders of this round will not be fulfilling the remainder of the grant recommendation. If you have concerns about the conduct of an SFF applicant or grantee, you can contact us at sff-contact@googlegroups.com

I don't think he's talking about consciousness here; I think it's about treating it as superior to you already.
I am very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models, and think it is a real safety issue.

I feel like a true high decoupler, who nevertheless wanted to maximize their body count and/or get laid more, would just hire lots of prostitutes -- as opposed to being a sociopath. So that means the supposed "high decouplers" who are advocating antisocial behavior probably have something else going on.
