20 months. Speechless
An 18-year-old recovering from a suicide attempt was sexually assaulted by the hospital worker entrusted with keeping her safe.
Adam Mushtaq ignored her repeated refusals, put his hand inside her pyjama bottoms and then claimed they were playing Grand Theft Auto when doctors entered the room.
The 28-year-old was jailed for 20 months yesterday after being convicted of sexually assaulting the vulnerable patient at a Glasgow hospital on January 25, 2024.
He was supposed to watch over her. Instead, he exploited his access to a young woman in crisis.
Glasgow Sheriff Court heard Mushtaq showed her images on his phone, including two naked photographs of himself, before hugging her, kissing her hand and making sexual comments.
He later returned to the room, closed the door and continued.
The woman described him putting an arm around her while sliding his other hand inside her pyjamas.
“I kept saying no, I just kind of let it happen, I didn’t know what to do,” she told the court.
When she expressed concern about nurses coming in, Mushtaq said he would move.
Doctors then entered. Mushtaq claimed the pair had been playing Grand Theft Auto and brought the game up on his phone.
The woman rejected that account in her evidence: “He wasn’t playing it, it was just for show.”
Even after that interruption, his behaviour continued. She told the court he kissed her and tried to lift her jumper in a staff lift before putting her into a taxi home.
She later disclosed what had happened to two support workers.
Sentencing Mushtaq, Sheriff Joan Kerr condemned his abuse of a position of trust and his refusal to take responsibility.
She said he had instead blamed the vulnerable woman he was supposed to safeguard.
The sheriff described the woman’s evidence as among the most difficult she had witnessed because of the effect his actions had had on her. Her victim impact statement laid out the continuing harm.
“You were a healthcare professional tasked with safeguarding her when you conducted yourself in this way,” the sheriff said.
“Rather than doing that, you committed opportunistic and sexually motivated offences.”
Mushtaq, of Croftfoot, Glasgow, had no previous convictions. His defence acknowledged the seriousness of the offence and the breach of trust, arguing that the attack had been opportunistic rather than planned.
He lost his healthcare job and had since been working in restaurants.
Alongside his prison sentence, Mushtaq was placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years and given a four-year non-harassment order banning any contact with his victim.
She entered hospital needing protection. The man assigned to provide it sexually assaulted her. Is nowhere safe anymore?
